Re: Foriegn Or Nigerian Names For Your Baby by jumie(f): 3:04pm On Feb 15, 2010
A name is as important as the person.

Whether you give a child a local or foreign name, the most important thing is knowing the meaning of such names and understanding that it could affect the child's future. Eg. When you name a child - Esubiyi (meaning - the devil has brought this), Iyabo (dead mother has returned), etc such names will impact negatively on the child and the child may even develop a low self esteem because of its name. English names such as Linda (meaning - snake), etc have also been known to connote something negative.

However, it is important that you give a child a name that he or she will be very proud of when he or she grows up!! grin

you both are right

The name means "pretty one" in Spanish and Latin. In Old German it means Lime tree; linden tree.  In Greek it is a variant of the name Melania (evolved into "Melinda"wink and it means "black haired one". In Hebrew it means "serpent".

anywho- give your child a common name and one that is easy to pronounce in the region you live (some european names are difficult for people here to pronounce just as some local names here are difficult for europeans to pronounce) and give them a traditioal name as thier middle name.

I totally agree with the bolded part. The English ppl are yet to adopt any of our names! Even if you have a child with an English person, they still wouldn't want to give the child a Nigerian name.

I dnt undastnd wat u mean by english name because as a xtian we normaly hv a baptismal name like charles, anthony, genevieve, henry, cornelia and so on. So, my child must surely hv one of those names and his/her native name. Bt i wl never subscribe to names like carl, avril, brian etc.
Re: Foriegn Or Nigerian Names For Your Baby by chrisj2(m): 8:00pm On Feb 25, 2010
I dont get the many multiple name - jus 2 names is enough in case of having common first names. I am not bothered about the origin or meaning of the name - its just a name. So I prefer shorter names and easily pronounciable names. Just like John, James, Steve and so on; Ade Olu, Ola will do for me.

Its funny how the ultra-religious can complain about Christian names being foreign. If only there were Africa names in the Bible wink

I like the Korean & Scandinavian (esp Norway) method of naming

Re: Foriegn Or Nigerian Names For Your Baby by Obelomo: 4:20pm On Mar 11, 2010
Like Jumie said the meaning is what is important, also to me the pronunciation and how the name sounds. Personally, I would give my children both, although I have not decided which would their main and first names.
