AS it becomes clearer by the day that another nationwide strike by university lecturers seems inevitable, students under the umbrella body of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) are making frantic efforts to appeal to both the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to review their stands and avoid the standoff, which will definitely bode ill for the sector. Chairmen of state chapters of ASUU are currently in Abuja, with the national leadership, collating and reviewing the results of the referendum they conducted in their separate chapters. The chairmen are expected to decide today (Sunday, August 13) whether or not to proceed on a nationwide strike, and for how long. The National Executive Council (NEC) of the union met at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi on the 22nd and 23rd July, 2017, and deliberated extensively on issues arising from the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement, the 2013 MoU and other related issues and decided to conduct a referendum at the branch congresses on the next line of action. According to a letter signed by the National President of ASUU, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, the issues at stake include payment of fractions/non-payment of salaries; non-payment of earned academic allowances, non-release of operational licence of NUPENCO, retired professors and their salaries, university staff schools, and funds for the revitalisation of public universities. However the National President of NANS, Mr Haruna Kadiri, says these issues are long-standing and that strikes called in the past had never really brought desired results. In a telephone interview on Saturday, Mr Kadiri said, “We are trying to meet with stakeholders to meet with ASUU to put the issues on the table, to see which ones we can plead with ASUU and the ones we can engage the federal government on. “As much as we are not in support of strike, we are not telling ASUU outright that it is wrong (you don’t flog a man and tell him not to cry), we are also pleading with the federal government to be responsible enough to meet the demands that they have reached over time (since 2009). “Agreed, it is not this present government that reached that agreement, but government is a continuum; so it is expected that government should have sat down with ASUU to review the agreement and agree on certain things…not for us to start hearing that ASUU wants to go on strike again. It’s unfortunate. “We’re planning to engage them on Monday. Let us sit down collectively and find a way out. “Honestly, I am not blaming ASUU; neither am I saying ‘kudos, go on strike’, but I think we should meet, review the issues and further talk about the issues. That is the only solution to it.” Kadiri however ASUU needs to explore other more effective means of achieving its goals, other than strikes, which he believes has never been helpful. “I once engaged ASUU and I said before I was born, ASUU had been going on strike, and if you ask me: has strike ever brought about the desired result? “Our institutions are research centres. Why is it that ASUU hasn’t gone on research to find a permanent solution to all of these their agitations? Because it looks like strike has never brought the desired results. “If ASUU cannot go on research to get a desired result on how to curb all of these issues, then we are in trouble in this country,” he added. All efforts to get comments from the Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, Mrs Chinenye Ihuoma, failed as persistent calls sent to her phone were not answered; neither did she reply a text message sent to her. 1 Like |

ASUU is a greedy body filled with Professors of no traceable impact to Nigeria's development. They are quick to send their wards to foreign institutions and will gladly take all possible measures to frustrate the common man's sons and daughters education here in Nigeria. Arrant Nonsense. MODIFIED Little wonder the ASUU memo circulating is filled with humiliating, shameful and unpardonable English errors. 8 Likes 1 Share

Is ASUU on strike? Fellow Nigerians we need to take a drastic decision on our leaders. They send their children abroad to study with our collective wealth and allow other Nigerians to suffer strike actions by not meeting the demands of the lecturers. 7 Likes |

To some extent it has yielded, It is unfortunate that the only language our government understand is the necessary interruption or let me say the so called unnecessary interruptions. Do you know that these interruptions gave birth to many interventions such as TET FUND and NEEDS ASSESSMENT? even if you don't know them i am sure you see their projects every were in the universities. 5 Likes |

It has for some lecturers at the detriment of students, lost a year to this ASUU crap, and some students will get overage for entry level positions all because of the hullabaloo... Things aint working as it ought to be, and unfortunately our system only respond to ransom or after there is total breakdown tho I dont see the reason why political office holders get paid promptly, they will decide and approve increment for themselves yearly but allow educationist to suffer... ... 1 Like |

This is just ridiculous. The strike was meant to compel the federal government to accede to their demands and let's be realistic here. Our leader's children are either studying abroad or private schools in Nigeria. So who suffers? the children of the common man. So if this does not directly affect those in power, I doubt if they would understand the plight of the common man. 3 Likes |

Honestly it has. If not for the incessant strike actions lecturing in Nigeria would have become absolutely nothing to desire. This would have left us with a crop of lecturers who would not pass for primary school teachers. Plus once in a while we see structures erected in our schools courtesy of the Federal Government. Our government understands only the language of strike action 3 Likes |

The fact is, since the Nigerian government has decided to actively work against the education sector then education has to fight back. It should be the same with the health sector but that is always a matter of life and death. 1 Like |

Well 1.Realistically speaking, govt cannot meet ASUU demands. Not in 2013...when oil prices were sky high and ASUU went on strike for the 3 trillion they were then promised, or even now...with the reduction to N1trillion (out of which 200BN has been paid). 2.The cold reality is that either fees go up.....or taxes go up so that we can have free education at all levels.Right now, universities need extra funding of at least N1.5 trillion (ASUU-FG 2009 estimates) to keep fees low, and to run properly. My idea is that we make universities public-private....and fund primary and secondary schools as well as Techincal colleges from the govt purse. 7 Likes |

khalhokage: And in 2013...when ASUU went on strike demanding for the agreed upon N3 trillion of 2009....we Nigerians forced them to take a reduced deal from govt to the tune of N1 trillion over 5 years. I bet you the same will happen if ASUU goes on strike again today. Govt will offer a reduced deal...which ASUU would be forced to take under public pressure from Nigerians. And universities continue to suffer. 2 Likes |
