Plus,the Soudan(or bilad as Sudan or "land of the blacks" as the Arabs called it) was a very vast region covering areas east and west of Lake Chad,directly south of the Sahara. Northern Nigeria happened to fall within this region at the time. The coastal region of what is today Nigeria constituted what geographers and sailors in those days called the "Guinea Coast".
