South Africa Deputy Minister Mduduzi Manana Resigns Amid Assault Probe

Deputy Minister of Higher Education Mduduzi Manana, who is currently facing assault charges for hitting a woman in a Johannesburg night club on August 5, has resigned. Manana’s resignation was announced by President Jacob Zuma on Saturday, who also thanked him for his contribution to government’s work during his term of office.
"President Jacob Zuma has received and accepted the resignation of the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mr Mduduzi Manana. The President has thanked Mr Manana for his contribution to the work of government during his term of office,” the presidency announced on Saturday. Manana’s resignation came amid growing calls from civil organizations, opposition parties and many citizens for him to resign. On Friday, a group of human rights organizations wrote to President Zuma, telling him reasons the deputy minister should be dismissed from office. Although some ANC members like ANC Women League president Dlamnini Bathabile jumped to Manana’s defence – most people in the ruling party, including National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete frowned at Manana for hitting Mandisa Duma. Last week, Manana lost his cool inside the Cubana restaurant after an argument on who should succeed President Jacob Zuma at the party’s elective conference in December turned sour. What actually led to the assault was when the assault victim, Mandisa Duma called him gay. She sustained a black eye‚ bruised knees and a swollen face and neck after the fight.

Duma later opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at the Douglasdale Police station the same day. She further claimed that while walking out, Manana also slapped her cousin across the face before turning on her in the parking lot. Mduduzi Manana made his first court appearance on August 10, in the Randburg Magistrate’s court, where he’s facing two charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The 34-year-old was released on R5,000 bail and was told not have any contact with witnesses. He will appear again in court on September 13. Manana, who claimed he was “extremely provoked” by Duma’s statement, will also face an ANC disciplinary inquiry, as announced by the ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe

He is not serving as a leader in any structure, so the only line of action will be subjecting him to a disciplinary hearing,” Mantashe said. The former deputy minister could face suspension or expulsion from the party if found guilty.
