The super eagles were coming off a 2-0 loss from their African Nations Cup qualifier game against South Africa at the Uyo Township Stadium. Key absentees and injuries dented the pride of the Super Eagles who had a sublime and enviable record against the Bafana Bafan of South Africa.

It was time to make amends and win the heart of the fans with the first of the double-header against fierce rivals Cameroon. The Super eagles know it's not doom and gloom but they have to prove a point to their fans to continue the fine form on topping the group table with two wins from two against: Zambia and Algeria.

However, before this game, the Cameroonians who are the current champions of Africa, have started an off-field mind game by not flying-in in time to Nigeria as expected and also raising claims stating that the Super Eagles use voodoo, part of which saw witch craft chase them away from their hotel room.

The Super eagles were not cut out for those shenanigans as they set their mind on taking all three points from the Cameroonians. Coach Gernot Rohr invited a handful and had his best squad for a long time in a while, putting up a superb starting xi to compete on home front.

First, it was the motivation of the Governor of Akwa-Ibom state that triggered the sublime performance from the super eagles, a promise he made which holds that: for each goal scored, the team receives $10.

|Here is the starting xi of the super eagles:
GK: Ikechukwu Ezenwa
DF: Abdullahi Shehu, Elderson Echiejile, Williams T.EKong, Leon Balogun
MF: Ogenyi Onazi, Wilfried Ndidi, Mikel John Obi (c)
FW: Victor Moses, Moses Simon, Odion Ighalo

Sub: Alampasu Dele (GK), Ajiboye, Ahmed Musa, Chinedu Awaziem, Agu, Oghnekaro Etebo, Chinedu Nwakaeme, Kelechui Iheanacho, John Agbo, Samuel, John Ogu, Ebuehi
