The Management of Covenant University and representatives of Huawei Technology, Nigeria, have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see Huawei establish its first telecoms academy in West Africaon Covenant University campus.
Mr. Wilson Yang, Hauwei Business Director of Partnership, said his company recognises Covenant University high ratings,which informed its choice as the preferred partner.


The MoU will see Huawei invest alongside Covenant University in training the university’s engineers, facilitate the certification of students and create employment opportunities for exceptionalgraduates of Covenant University who are interested in working with the company.

The Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor AAA. Atayero, said “It is a thing of joy whenever a process was started and nurtured to fruition”.He told the Huawei representatives that making Covenant University the hub of Huawei’s first telecoms academy in West Africa will no doubt make the University commit itself to making the relationship a practical one.

Professor Atayero said that as the University progresses in its quest to become one of the top 10 universities in the world within the next six years, it was important that its operation be at the cutting-edge technology.The establishment of Huawei’s academy, he added,would helpsharpen the knowledge-base of telecoms students in the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering and other related disciplines in the university.

The Vice-Chancellor stated that having led the University’s delegation on a visit to Huawei’s Headquarters in Shenzhen, China, and experienced firsthand what they are capable of doing; he was in no doubt that there are lots that the University can benefit from the relationship. According to him, “This is the beginning of greater things to come”.


Quanser Engineering centre of Excellence

Quanser, a world leader in experiments and courseware for engineering education and research for control systems, robotics and mechatronics, has proposed to the Management of Covenant University (CU) its desire to set up a Centre of Excellence in the institution.
Speaking during a courtesy visit on the Management of CU, the Regional Manager, South Asia, Middle East and Africa of Quanser, Yona Baskharoun, who expressed excitement at what she referred to as “great things happening at Covenant University”, said her organisation wants to have a Centre of Excellence at CU with innovative curriculum, which will attract students and enhance the ranking of the university.

Baskharoun, who was at the head of a delegation featuring a coterie of Technical Partners, listed Ranking, Recruitment and Retainment as the three goals of any university, and declared that Quanser is willing to collaborate with the university to achieve these objectives, with the setting up of a Centre of Excellence as the high point of the relationship.

“Quanser is a very innovative company that does things with robots and control. If you want to be the best, you learn to stay ahead of the curve. We are also an academic company; we have a lot of professors in our company; we understand the value of engineering. It allows us to be at the forefront because we know where education is heading,” said Baskharoun.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor AAA. Atayero, said the university welcomes the idea of a Centre of Excellence, being the only university in Africa that wants to be among the top 10 in the world in the next five years. He demanded to know how Quanser can help with ranking and recruitment of international students, to which Baskharoun replied that her company’s system and solutions will help.
