A study has confirmed that the wind profiles and characteristics of south west region of Nigeria are suitable for electricity generation, with the energy cost analysis showing that generation cost can be as low as 0.02/kWh and as high as 5.03/kWh, depending on the turbine model employed.

Dr. Oluseyi Ajayi and Dr. David Omole, both of Covenant University; Professor Richard Fagbenle of the Obafemi Awolowo University; Professor James Katende of the Botswana International University of Science and Technology; and Adekunle Badejo of the Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa had in their study, ‘Wind Energy Study and Energy Cost of Wind Electricity Generation in Nigeria: Past and Recent Results and a Case Study’, assessed the wind energy potential of 10 selected sites in the south western region of Nigeria and established that sites in Lagos and Oyo States were adequately suited for large scale generation, while those from other sites may be suitable for small scale generation.

Adopting renewable energy resources for electricity production and other energy needs has become a notable objective globally, the researchers submitted.

I like to see collaborative studies among leading African universities such as this. Very soon, we will start to see intelligent disagreement by african scholars in journals like it used to happen among western thinkers of old.
