Virtually in all our mosques, there are provisions for special prayer mats for the imam, is there any correlation between this practise and the sunnah.

Mat is mat. No big deal in that. It is like saying why is there an inch in the wall for imam. Mat/wall inch are only indications of imam's maqam

# Absolutely it makes no difference. And that's why it is even forbidden for Imam to stand taller than the mamun (followers) as we see in virtually all our mosques today. However, for Imam to have his own special prayer mat, there's nothing wrong in it.

# For the record, Nabi had his personal prayer mat and "sajdagah" - a very small fibre mat with the size of forehead, used exclusively for sajdah.

AS LONG AS THE IMAM DOES NOT ATTACH ANY IMPORTANCE TO THE MAT.. No problem
