President Buhari orders immediate evacuation of Nigerians students in Dominican Island few mins ago

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the immediate evacuation of Nigerian students stranded in Dominican Island occasioned by the reported Hurricane Maria that thrashed the Island.
Nigerian students attend medical schools in Dominican Islands which prepare them to move to the U. S. and Europe for the completion of their medical degree programmes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that following the president’s directive, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had since been on top of the situation.

NAN gathered that the ministry,which has been monitoring the situation, had already assigned a senior official to travel for the purpose of issuing the stranded students with temporary travel certificates.

The affected students had since been evacuated to safety.

When contacted for comment on the issue, Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, confirmed the Presidential order, saying that the president was touched with the conditions of the students.

“The President was deeply touched when he learnt that some of them escaped with nothing but the shirts on their backs,’’ he said.

According to him, the students will be moved to Brazil, where they don’t need visas, for onward evacuation to Nigeria.

At least 10 people were killed as Hurricane Maria, ranked a Category 4 storm, raged through the Caribbean including parts of the Dominican Republic with heavy rain and high winds as it passed off its east coast on Thursday.

Hurricane Maria, with sustained winds of up to 250 km per hour, hit Puerto Rico on Wednesday, making it the strongest storm to hit the U.S. territory in nearly 90 years.

for an african govt it is not encouraged

that is why they behave the way they are and not held accountable for their actions.

If I had a say in the matter,I would have counseled evacuation before the hurricane struck the island. That way many of them wouldn't have been left with nothing as the report stated. For the record there was a hurricane warning/alert. We could have made use of that.

First,they are not returning them to Nigeria permanently. They'll still return to school after the mess on that island has been cleared up. Secondly,have you seen the level of devastation there? I was watching the news and saw thousands of people lining up in just one spot just to take a sip of water. So,if evacuating them from there would save them from perishing from thirst for instance,then I doubt if anyone of them would want to remain around that place the way it currently is. They would gladly hop on the plane and fly to where bloody ever. I know you would too.

There are Nigerians in places like Cambodia and Laos. Chad and Niger too. So,what is wrong with Dominica? Nothing. It is quite a cool place with some of the best medical colleges in the British commonwealth. Besides,many of these guys are students over there not necessarily the usual "hustlers".
