We can certainly all agree that mobile phones have come a long way through the years. There is however one thing that has not changed much, which is…you still have to insert the SIM of you network provider to get their mobile services. Even though the SIMs have gotten smaller over the years, they still have to be inserted into the device. The Apple watch 3 is one of the first gadgets to use an eSIM. We’ve also heard that Samsung and Apple have been in talks with network providers on the adoption of eSIMs. What is an eSIM? An eSIM is an electronic sim card, and it is expected to replace the conventional plastic SIM cards in future. In its place will be an embedded chip that is non removable. With this, you wont need to swap sims again when you need to change operators. The information on the eSIM will be re-writable by all operators, meaning you can store multiple carrier profiles at once. To change network, you simply need to made a call or change some configuration. What makes it better? Here’s why it will be better: You wouldn’t be needing multiple devices anymore, you wouldn’t have to swap SIMS anymore when you travel, you can easily connect and sync with other smart gadgets such as smart watches and tv’s. Also the embedded eSIM will mean doing away with the traditional sim slots. Creating more space for manufacturers and ultimately bringing about better compact designs for mobile devices. http://techguy.ng/what-is-an-esim/ 3 Likes |

I hope it wont be counter productive.... Cos sim sales(from sim replacement) would collapse. That means telco workers wont meet their sim target. Not meeting target in d long run, a sack beckons.. |

Well good development. It would enhance competition between network providers since we can switch between networks rather than porting. We are genius in our field. check!

timbs001: That it is embedded means it will come with the phone. To register with MTN for example, you'll have to go to MTN office, give them the phone, they'll configure it, and you are good to go. Want to switch to Airtel? Go to an Airtel service center, and they'll do the same process if you don't want to port the number (you'll get a different number), or you can just port the number to Airtel, voila!! Making sense?? 2 Likes |

So I will need to make some calls just to switch to another sim when I can just popping in another sim and I'm good to go? Sounds like a foolish idea. |

timbs001: You switch and configure the embedded sim on your new phone to carry your profile. Think of it like logging into your email address from any system. 1 Like |

Nothing beats the use of "small torch-light phones" so what then happens to them? You can rely on them to stay online even when your smart phone's battery is down. |
