You are a legend. I had a friend who was into clairvoyancy, psychic and other paranormal stuffs. She invited me to some fair once to try out ‘regression’ but I didn’t honour that.

I remember her because some songs here seem to transport me to some sweet scary places I think I’ve been before. Amazing instruments and voices. My dendrites are firing, cell bodies active and every single axon has been traversed by some strange electrical activities.
I think I’m not born yet but I see myself wearing cortina shoes from Bata shop. I see myself receiving a gift from Father Christmas at Kingsway shop along Okpara Avenue. Jim Nwobodo is still the governor. Bishop Eneja is the top man at Holy Ghost Church. Otubelu is at St. Baths Asata.

Thanks for the hypnotherapy Naptu.

Thanks for doing the heavy lifting for us
again and keeping Ishilove's thread going.
Tina Charles' songs were huge
in the late 1970s, but the pressures
of everyday living just made me forget
her for some years now.

I've been listening to "dance little lady dance" and "I love to love"
by Tina Charles for over 4 hours now
and they sure bring back good memories of
1976/late 70s.

Both songs were big then in Nigeria and were
played on radio and TV right into the 1980s.
My father loved both songs along with the songs
of
Miriam Makeba, Stevie Wonder, Don Williams,
Victor Uwaifo [Joromi:1969 release], James
Brown... and
more.

He would play them in his Volvo while
driving and/or at home
and I can say that he influenced my love
for good, timeless music and that is why
I have my collections of some evergreen
tracks/vinyl records - and I hope to get more.

I have to sign off now...

All the best!

So you have memories of the 70s? My parents had not even met then. cheesy cheesy cheesy

I know it must have been a huge hit because my mum, who isn't a fan of music generally loves Tina Charles. Her songs are one of the earliest in my memory, especially 'I love to love'. That one gives me goose bumps any time

Hi once again... smiley

Yeah... the roaring 70s!
The era of Ofege and co, which
I earlier posted on this thread.

The economy was OK then - 1976/77.
N1=$1 was the approximate exchange rate
so people caught on to the latest songs
then from Kingsway Stores or some
other departments stores then.

People [middle-class] flew with ease to London via Nigeria Airways and/or
the iconic British Caledonian Airways like you were going from Lagos to Ukwuani
in Delta State! grin

Its good to know that your mum
loved Tina Charles' songs. Her era was
within the period when people really
sang meaningful topical songs and that is why some 1990s and early 2000s
musicians have done remakes of
1960s/1970s songs.

I will post some stimulating 1970s tracks that are not yet posted within
the week on this thread as well.

So, you take care of yourself Ishilove

I promised to post a Nigerian song, so here it is (before I forget again).

This song was originally done in the 1970s and someone covered it in the 1990s. I tried very hard to remember the names of the artistes, but I couldn't.

I eventually remembered the name of the group that originally recorded the song, but I still can't remember the name of the person that did the 1990s version.

I want you to be mine.
I want you to be mine.
I want you by my side,
Be my guide

Once upon a time TV stations in Nigeria began transmitting at 5pm on weekdays and 9am at the weekend and went off air around midnight.

Then, c1981, a new TV service started in Lagos. Lagos Television (LTV) transformed into Lagos Weekend Television (LWT) at 7pm on Fridays and transmitted non stop until 7am on Monday.

LWT showed great shows like The Invisible Man, Dan August, The Incredible Hulk, Hawai 5-0, Skarsky and Hutch, etc. They also showed the latest movies.

There was a guy in my house who made the experience very interesting. They would try to make everybody go to bed at 12:30am, but I would hear noise coming from the kitchen 30 minutes later.

This guy would sneak into the kitchen, fry everything fryable and sit in front of the TV with his feast. I would usually join him a few minutes later.

Then the LWT studios burnt down c1985. That was the end of 24 hours TV. From that point onwards LWT went off air at midnight and began transmitting at 7am on Saturdays and Sundays.

This song was originally the theme song for a 1981 movie about the Olympics. Then Ernie Watts and Quincy Jones made a jazz version. This jazz version became the theme tune of LWT.

O my God! I thought I had already posted it!

There were two unusual discs in that stack of records. Almost all the records were black, but Boney M's Holi-Holiday was translucent yellow and this beautiful song was on a white record.

This song is just absolutely wonderful. You know how much I love disco music and string orchestras. This is the ultimate disco ballad.

Don't go changing, trying to please me
You never let me down before
I don't imagine you're too familiar
And I don't see you anymore
I would not leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far (no love)
I took the good times, I'll take the bad times
I'll take you just the way you are

Don't go trying some new fashion
Don't change the color of your hair
You always have my unspoken passion
Although I might not seem to care

I don't want clever conversation
I don't want to work that hard
I just want some someone to talk to
I want you just the way you are

I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
What will it take till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you.

I said I love you and that's forever
And this I promise from my heart
I could not love you any better
I love you just the way you are

There is no Stevie wonder record on this thread. Wasn't he a thing in Nigeria in the 70s.

I remember that there was some controversy when he cracked a joke about Stevie Wonder (or blind people) and he was severly criticised. He apologised, but Stevie Wonder was not offended. I can't remember what the joke was and I can't find anything about it online.

Someone told me about how she heard the bassline of this song in 1990 and jumped up and was about to dance when she discovered that it was another song. (It was actually MC Hammer's You Can't Touch This. Hammer sampled heavily from this song).

"She's a very kinky girl.

Would you believe that this song was on an album of Spyro Gyra songs that my mum bought in the UK in 1979. I never really paid any attention to that album because I didn't know the name Spyro Gyra. I heard most of the songs for the first time on Radio Nigeria.

It wasn't until 1986 or 1987 that I played the record for the first time (out of curiousity) and discovered that I already knew most of the songs on it.

In my eyes, Project Fame began with. . . Irene Cara in 1980.

I'm gonna make it to heaven!

Miriam Makeba [4 March 1932-10 November 2008]
She was born to a Xhosa father and a Swazi mother

Miriam Makeba - Pata Pata [1967 Hit Version]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qWIlX7vhBo

Miriam's most famous song Pata Pata was
recorded and released as an album in the United States in
November 1967 but the song reigned seriously in the 1970s
and part of the 1980s!

This is one of the TRUE iconic/evergreen songs of all-time
from my music list as of 2017 going on to 2018...and beyond.

The song's title "Pata Pata" means "touch touch"
in the Xhosa language [Nelson Mandela's language], in which
the song was originally written and sung. "Pata Pata" was
also the name of a style of dance that was popular in the
shebeens of Johannesburg's Townships in the mid-1950s.

My father made me to love Miriam Makeba
because he would play her songs among that of
other artistes in the house or in the car and I
picked up right where he left off! grin

The Lijadu Sisters - Danger [Released 1976]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Bc6XJvv5Bc

"DANGER" was a massive hit in 1976 and was
openly played in public alongside the music of Ofege and other
70s icons. I just love this track... EVERGREEN!
