TSTV which launched on October 1 has explained that it is ready to start selling its decoders across Nigeria on November 1.

Speaking on the issue TSTV Managing Director/CEO, Dr Bright Echefu explained thus:

“Commercialization of our decoders will resume officially on Nov. 1 and by that time, every part of Nigeria would have TSTV decoders for people to buy.

“We are releasing about one million which can go round and our target for the first quarter is one million units.

“In every quarter we will bring one million units and we are targeting four million units within the next one year.

He also explained steps his company is taking to avoid commercial sabotage:

“We don’t want a situation where someone would pick our decoders and dump them somewhere.

“That is why we are very careful because of competition.

“ We have received well over 6,000 applications and it has been overwhelming processing these people; but so far, we have been able to accredit more than 748 dealers and we have received applications from more than 3,000 of them.

“That is why we have not commercialized our services even though we are the ones losing because we have enough decoders to cover the whole of Nigeria.

“But it will be unfair with all the money put in for us to give decoders out and those decoders don’t get to the end users,’’ Echefu added.

Meanwhile, DStv the market leader for pay-TV in Nigeria has announced its subscribers can now suspend their subscription on their decoders for up to 2 weeks.

The company explained the process goes thus:

You can suspend your DStv accounts while you are away on holiday for up to two weeks at a time.

To do this, you need,
• A scanned copy of customer’s ID card,
• Duration for suspension (between 7-14 days)
• Minimum of 7 days credit in account by date of disconnection

Request should be sent to suspension@ng.multichoice.com at least 2 days before the start of the suspension. You can also visit our branches to request disconnection.

Despite the disappointment of many Nigerians with the failure of TSTV to start sales of its decoder immediately after launching, its emergence has led to DSTV increasing channels in its free bouquet, new channel offerings on GOTV and other attempts to retain subscribers.
StarTimes, the second company in Nigeria’s Pay-TV space in terms of subscribers is also offering 3 extra days on 1 month subscription as well as reversing some changes it had made to viewing Ligue 1 matches on its Sports Life channel for Basic subscribers.

Ultimately, it is the public that benefits from this competition as these and other companies jostle for their loyalty.
