Hewlett Packard (HP) is a foremost manufacturer of printers and arguably the most common in Africa, so i will talk here on how to know the functions of a printer by the name.

Most HP printers can be grouped into two broad groups
--Laserjets (Printers that uses Laser technology that is uses Toners)
--Inkjets (Deskjet, Inkjet, Officejet falls into this category) they are printers that uses ink.

HP inkjet printers do not have special naming there are just numeric like Deskjet 2130, Deskjet 2135 usually the higher the number the faster the print per minute and more functions the printer will offer.

For HP Laserjet the naming includes numeric and alphabet..so it is possible here to see a printer with lower figure having more functions than one with a higher figure..eg the MFP M26nw has more functions than the MFP M130a though it has lesser print speed and toner management.

Common alphabet used in products and their meaning

a-- when a is attached to a printer it means the printer is ordinary (Without advance features)
d -- D stands for Duplex meaning such a printer can print back and front automatically
e-- is usually an enhancement on a particular product...
f- F stands for Fax
n- Network ready (can work perfectly when networked to severally computers)
w - Wireless (can print from wireless devices)
