Some young school leavers try to find out what they can do in order to earn money. For many, the road to success cuts through colleges, tertiary institution and perhaps vocational institute. But for the skyrocketing cost of education, coupled with the widespread squeeze on their parent’s perhaps non-existent bank account. This makes a traditional two or four year’s degree a pipe dream.
The following listed suggestions are practical ideas and solutions that can help you earn a living as a young school leaver in Nigeria. It doesn’t really matter, if you live in the rural areas, suburbs or the province of the rich in big cities.
1. Delivery guy: You can earn cash by riding your bicycle and making deliveries of online ordered items in your environment. The products ranges from food item to electronic products. The pay is dependent on the environment, you get to earn #15,000 - #50,000.
2. College/Primary School Teachers: Fresh out of the secondary school, this is another way to make a living, you can apply to teach in primary schools around your areas, some secondary schools do accepts school cert holders to teach the junior secondary schools students. This way, you keep up with knowledge, and you refresh your memory. Pay is relative to your environment, you earn within #5,000 - #50,000. P.S You must have a good result either in WAEC or NECO at least 5 Credits.
3. Sales Associate: There are stores, marts and outlets that offer young folks the opportunity to handle sales in their operations. From groceries to household items, consumables and electronics. Example include Shoprite, Pep, Justrite. It also include local outlets like in your environment. Clothing, Painting materials, building material stores and lots more. The pay ranges from #10,000 - #40,000.
4. Restaurant & Cafeteria Cooks: Prepare a wide selection of dishes and cook most orders individually. Some restaurants cooks may order supplies, set menu prices and plan the daily menu. Most international food outlet might not employ you without certification, but most restaurants and cafeterias owned by locals would hire you. The pay ranges from: #10,000 - #40,000.
5. Food Service Associate: Responsible for daily operation of restaurants and other establishments that prepare and serve food and beverages. Help to ensure that customers are satisfied with their dining experience. The pay ranges from #10,000 - #40,000.
6. Pharmacy technicians: Help pharmacists dispense prescription medication to customers or health professionals. It requires no degree or certification. Pay ranges from: #10,000- #50,000
7. Hotel & Lodging Associates: Ensure that guests on vacation or business travel have a pleasant experience at a hotel or other types of establishments with accommodation. Pay: #15,000 - #70,000, depending on location.
8. Logistics Associates: With your school cert or no degree, you can apply to major companies, and help move the products from the production line into the warehouse, where there are no forklifts. Oversee the production line and handle other ancillary duties. The pay ranges from #15,000 - #30,000.
Having done any of these, you've started building your resume already, with great work experience.
