Saudi Arabia just made a humanoid robot a citizen, making it the first country to grant a robot citizenship.

The robot, Sophia, took to the stage at a conference in Riyadh to express how ‘honoured’ she was at being made a Saudi citizen.

“I am very honored and proud for this unique distinction,” the robot
said onstage. “This is historical to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with a citizenship.”

Saudi Arabia recently granted women the right to drive. Now, the Gulf Nation has granted a humanoid robot 'full citizenship'.

As usual, not everyone is happy with the citizenship bestowed upon Sophia, with some describing her as 'bizarre' and others referring to it as 'terminator in real time'.

The humanoid robot, that was designed by Hong Kong firm, Hanson Robotics, went on to express her hopes for robots in the future.

Sophia said: "I want to live and work with humans so I need to express the emotions to understand humans and build trust with people."
