1. LOCK THE DOORS & WINDOWS. Never forgot that no matter what. It is basic, your home/office should be locked when you’re not around. I know someone who has the habit of coming back after the doors and windows had been locked just to confirm that everywhere was locked properly. Be like this person.


2. BE CONSCIOUS OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT.

Vigilance shouldn’t be left for your local vigilante group, it starts with you. It is only fair that you understand your environment, know the faces of people that come in and out of your community, as difficult as it may sound, you can involuntarily know just by paying attention. Inform your significant others of your movement and its itinerary.

Now here’s a quick one –don’t get distracted by earphones, text messages and phone calls especially when you’re walking alone in the night. You don’t want to be caught off guard, do you?Make casual eye contact with people when walking, it keeps your sharpness alive.

Walk with confidence, it shows that you’re in control of your environment. Body language matters whole lot. Don’t walk with your hands in your pockets. If you’re scared of going alone at night, let someone accompany you.



3. DON’T BE OSTENTIOUS. Why shoot yourself in the leg,when you can do better. Don’t front your money, jewelries, phones and other valuables while in the public just to show off, the consequences are enormous and it can make you an easy target.

Always keep your transport fare ready when boarding a bus rather than opening your wallet publicly.



4. BE FRIENDS WITH YOUR MIND. The mind is a powerful tool, make out time to listen to it. Trust your instinct, if something or someone makes you uncomfortable just ‘’get out ‘’ of there. Be careful of the strangers you respond to.


5. ALWAYS HAVE EMERGENCY NUMBERS/CONTACTS. Always know how to get help in the event of an emergency, security or medical. Don't wait till the situation develops before you think of who to contact and how.
