5 Things You Need To Know About Maintaining Your Honda by Nobody: 7:48pm On Nov 07, 2017 |
Whether you're driving a 2016 Honda CR-V or a 1999 Honda Accord, there's only one way to ensure that it'll keep running the way you want it to... regular maintenance. Often overlooked in newer cars, maintenance is key to preventing major damage to your vehicle that can be costly and dangerous. Taking regular care of your car is critical to ensuring that the car is performing optimally and will live a full, long life. Here are 5 service tips that can help your Honda stay in prime form long into its old age. 1) Take Advantage of Your Honda's ‘Maintenance Minder System.' That handy touchscreen computer you use for navigation and music streaming isn't the only computer in your Honda. Your vehicle has an internal computer that is critical to your car's operation but also keeps track of diagnostic information and system statuses. When you bring the car into the dealership, the mechanics can plug into the computer and read exactly what any issues might be, but for the driver, Honda created the Maintenance Minder System. Using the same onboard computer system, the Maintenance Minder System looks at your driving style and car usage and calculates exactly when you'll need regular maintenance such as an oil change or transmission fluid flush. It's a technological way to ensure your car is receiving proper maintenance with complete accuracy. It's better than rough mileage estimates and a perfect tool for Honda drivers to take advantage of. 2) Learn More About How Your Car Works Becoming better acquainted with how your Honda operates under the hood can allow you to do rough maintenance checks yourself and avoid major damage. Use your owner's manual, Honda web resources, and your mechanic to learn about the location, function, and purpose of everything from power steering fluid to timing belts. If you truly learn about these critical car components, you can look under the hood once in a while and ensure everything looks good. If you notice a worn belt or low oil level during one of these amateur inspections, you'll be able to bring your car to the dealership for maintenance before a bigger problem occurs. Doing so could save you time, money and injury. However, if you don't feel comfortable with certain aspects of your car's function, don't poke around under the hood and cause damage or injury yourself. 3) Use Your Honda Dealership Mechanics at your Honda dealership work on one make: Honda. They know everything about each Honda model and year. They know they variety of trims. They know Honda parts. They know recalls, warning, common issues and the best preventive measures to take. Simply put: Honda mechanics know Honda cars. Take advantage of the dealership expertise and allow your car to get the best treatment. Don't opt for some other shop where corners are cut, and your car will need more follow up work. Additionally, use Honda parts for any repairs or upgrades to ensure that you are getting the parts and pieces that your vehicle was designed to have. 4) Replace the Parts You Can While you're probably not going to be changing your oil or doing more serious work on your car, there are a few simple fixes that you can do yourself. Changing your windshield wipers, switching out an old battery or replacing your cabin air filter are simple fixes that you can do. They all improve the use of your car and don't require significant automotive knowledge. 5) Don't Wait for Disaster to Strike Too many people wait for a car problem before bringing their Honda into the shop. While mechanics can help fix the problem and repair any damage, they may be able to do more if they catch it earlier. Bring your car in for regular maintenance when you don't have any major issues to have the car looked over and inspected for future problems. Nip the problems in the bud and avoid significant repair costs. For example, take your car in for regular oil changes ensures that your engine is lubricated, and everything is functioning properly. Waiting too long can lead to severe engine damage which costs thousands of dollars more than a simple oil change. Basic preventative maintenance is the best way to keep your Honda on the road, driving the way you like it.
