Some people in Nairaland are too useless, it is better for a polithieftian to steal the money we couldn't see and get bailed than an idiot harrasing you with a weapon just to collect your hard earned money, sometimes they even kill you if you waste their time. I think the jugdement is fair if they are really guilty.

It's normal.

I know some people who are coming to call Buhari.

Look at them Laughing.

Some people are coming to ask what about the politicians who stole billions.
Please are you not brave enough to sue them?

Let's comment responsibly.

Oga politician, but you know deep inside you that they don't deserve a death sentence, even though they had a gun. Nobody is brave enough to sue you or your fellow politicians because it'll be a waste of time, since you guys would go scot free... And the aftermath of that action (sueing) is what everyone's afraid of(you know what I mean)

The Law is straightforward, if you steal with a gun regardless of the amount (even if it's #100), the punishment is the death penalty.

I bet you if those guys had robbed her of millions of naira without using any weapon, the worst they will get is jail them and if they are lucky bail self.

It seems unfair but that's the reality of law.

That's why our politicians get away with stealing cus they are "smarter".... Using pen with no guns.

Even if all they stole was a used ear cotton bud, as long as it was stolen at gunpoint - using violence - then they deserve to die.

I wonder what this judge would say about deziani, Babachir, Maina. If only Nigeria could adopt Chinese style of dealing with corruption. Most upright citizens wouldn't feel disenchanted. If this is true then, this country is f*cked

Don't mind the idiots. Anyone who has experienced violent crime like robbery or kidnapping, with all its trauma, pain, misery, and sorrows, would understand why the law is harsher on violent criminals than fraudsters or whatever - worldwide.

I get very disgusted when I see bastards here comparing armed robbers or kidnappers with yahoo boys or corrupt politicians. Anyone who makes such a comparison must be incurably mad.

Two men who allegedly stole a lady’s handbag, telephone and other personal effects at gunpoint will die by hanging or firing squad, an Anambra State High court has pronounced .

The High Court sitting at Ihiala Local Government Area of the state and presided over by Justice Okey Onunkwo said there was sufficient evidence to convict the duo.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspects, Anene Maduka, Ikenna Obi and Osadebe Ezeh on February 2, 2017 allegedly stole a mobile phone, a handbag and N10,000 cash belonging to one Miss Chinonye Ogujiuba of Eziama Uli.

The Nokia phone was valued at N15,500, while the handbag was estimated at N2,500.

Anene Maduka, charged with the other suspects was, however, discharged and acquitted for lack of evidence.

The identity of Maduka, who was the first defendant in the case, was made an issue in the trial and the court agreed that he was not properly identified even though the victim gave evidence that he was waiting for the others on his commercial motorcycle while the robbery lasted.

In his submission, the defense counsel for the convicts — Calistus Ohanusi and Enright Okilie — had argued that the burden of proof on criminal matters rested on the prosecution who he said did not prove that their clients robbed, or took part in robbing the victim, maintaining that there was no sufficient evidence to convict them.

The Prosecution Counsel, Charity Madukife, submitted that the burden of proof had been discharged by calling eye witnesses; adding that the defence could not fault the evidence adduced.

Delivering the judgment, the presiding judge, Justice Okey Onunkwo, said there was no sufficient evidence against the first defendant (Maduka).

The judge said,”There was eye witness evidence against the convicts, as the victim had raised the alarm after the robbery, leading to the arrest of the culprits at Umudimogo Ihiala, after which they were handed over to the police.”

Justice Onunkwo thereby sentenced them to death by hanging or firing squad.

The law simply states that if you Rob with a weapon, and there is enough evidence to prove that you robbed with a weapon, you will be sentenced to die, it is very simple, those that wish for a more lenient punishment should contact the State House of assembly

It's not about how much you steal, it's about HOW you steal.

You people need to stop being foolish.

Come back here to tell me your real opinion about this after you've been robbed, and probably your sister or wife or girlfriend has been molested by armed robbers who eventually only stole a 'palasa' torchlight phone from your house. Compare that experience to politicians stealing 'imaginary' billions you only hear about in the news, but that you don't know about.

Violent crime is personal. Too personal. It destroys and traumatises at a personal level. The law is not foolish. That's why the law punishes violent crime more harshly than embezzlement in EVERY civilised country in the world.

Why don't they deserve a death sentence, tell me if the had oppurnity to kill they would that is the reason why they went with gun and bullets. if someone snatches your bag, you get to mourn just your property that was stolen but when they attack you with weapon or at gun point you do not only lose your properties but you are also left traumatized by the experience that is if you survive it. I have been there before. kidnappers that kidnap people at gunpoint like Evans also deserve a harsher punishment.
