Short Story;-The Silent Experence. by philoedu(m): 4:03pm On Nov 15, 2017
Cassidy- had left the country side to the urban city, many years ago at the age of sixteen soon after his sixth grade to further his college education. After the transfer, he was greeted with a very different reality, he later come to view as an uphill task as he tried adjust to the new yielded-filed of realities. Although, seems promising, he was aware he needed a constructive creative effort to get what he set himself to achieve. Yet he was also well aware he needs to work hard, if his expectation must be meant in his silent journey.

Along the way, Cassidy never for a moment fail to realized that he was going to further his education anytime. He never doubts about this, whether he gets the necessary assistance or not as long as he work hard towards. And to this prospect, he was always optimistic as a compelling necessity. The same is true he never loses sight of his prayerful background with some level of faith and this he would hold firm to be true. He still remembered in his residing apartment, the catholic-priest who stays in the last floor. With his presence, Cassidy never for a day fail to attend the morning mass before taken up any task of the day.

Sometimes, they could just be two or three person present at the mass, of which often times; he acted as the mass-server. With this trend of things and upbringing, he had the necessary encouragement and some level of faith that would remind him of the task ahead of him. In this perspective he never for a moment lose sight of what looks like a personal vision, as far as his carrier was concerned in his conduct. He also tends to take himself very seriously such that, after the day’s work, he would join the group of friends to spend the night in the library to read, known by then as –Awoko.

Even, if it meant spending most of the time to sleep off, like many others , with just a few hours of reading, it still a way to take himself serious of what he intend to do with himself. Although, he was yet to enroll into a secondary school, yet majority of his friends were already at the university and they seems to admire and love him for his conduct. And in particular, his tachitunum- (silence) with an appearance of a humble unique individual. It is this uniqueness and in what looks like a humble beginning of appearance, that distinguish him from others and made most of his friends to even gives him freely their own meal ticket on daily base. In fact, he was like” when a child washes his hand clean, he eats with the elders”.

Cassidy though, an introvert individual he maybe, this tends to have a telling on him .Because often he had difficulty explicating his problems, even when it appears glaring in his face value. However, inspired he maybe, he refuse to let lose the cure spirit of humbleness, as a concept not only in abstract but leaving it since he read it, in one of the novel he loved so much and of which he read a great deal in the past, by “Chinua Achebe’s “Things fall apart”, although, he admired Okonkwo, as character, but he never embrace his high level of courage to get rid of Ikemefuna, who mistook Okokwo to be her father. He did not particularly like the heading initially, until he read it, with this adage he could not forget- according to which:- “ those whom their pan-cane are being broken for them, by a benevolent spirit, must not fail to be humble” and for him, he told himself he belong to this category of individuals, and hence, strive to be humble. Gradually, in facing -up to his reality, “nell bene, nell male”or in good or bad situations, he has now come to the point of making a change.

And all along, he had never wasted a moment without thinking of doing something different, if that would mean a demonstration of eagerness and seriousness in his determination. It was this mindset that actually propels him to join the boys scout when he eventually enters into college. During the time they had undertaken some expeditions, and what seems to standout was this two-week he spent in the bush without telling anyone. As a group, they were about a dozen of them, as they match to the outskirt of the town into a nearby forest of which they spent the next two weeks and feed for themselves without taken anything along.

And when they were going, they were only allowed just a kit for those of them who chose to take a few things; otherwise, no one was to carry any edible item along. In fact, they were divided into four groups of which Cassidy was made a leader of his group. Before any execution of any given task, the group must have to wake up at 4am to run a couple of kilo- meter to the nearby village. And when they get there, they must start the cleaning up from one street to the other that has come to be called –a civic duty.

And sometimes, the villager will wake up to meet them busy themselves struggling with the pile up rubbish to do away with them. With this activities, the villagers tends not to comprehend the act, and not always without a great surprise, and a great deal of explanation behind the act. This is obvious, simply because of the unique and a kind of experience rare to the villagers, of which they have never witnessed in their life time. As they even come to view them and thought at a time, it was a ghost -invasion of their villages, in particular, at that early hour between five and six, when two people could not clearly identify themselves.

And to be exact, it was about five to ten kilometer they had to cover daily to get ride and clean up the refuse, as they move from one village to the other for two weeks. Soon he opens his eyes to realize he was too far away from home with a new experience to contend with this time, when his friend tap him to wake up for another journey.
