The University of Ibadan has continued to promote academic excellence in teaching and learning.
Our academic staff continue to make giant strides all over the world as evident in the many
competitive grants and fellowships that they won since my last address to convocation.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, since the inauguration of the UI Research Foundation in 2013,
the University had funded inter-disciplinary studies through the Foundation that have good potentials
to impact on our immediate society under the chairmanship of Rt. Hon. Dr. Chevalier U.J. Itsueli,
KSG, OON and with Professor Ayoade M. J. Oduola as Director, and members drawn from a broad
spectrum of society. The Foundation continues, as envisaged at inception, to make notable progress
in securing contributions of Stakeholders to strengthen the research platform in UI. Moreover, the
registration of the Foundation with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) of Nigeria in June,
2016 as a semi-autonomous unit to support research in UI has been valuable in attracting support and
collaborations from the private sector and international community. The Key achievements of the
Foundation in 2017 include:
Continuing funding, support and servicing of a N49million research portfolio of 7
collaborative research grants.
➢ Award of a N7.5 million Research career Development grant to Dr. A.B. Ayinmode of the
Department of Vet. Microbiology and Parasitology with a focus on developing Novel
Genotyping tool for tracking infectious sources for cryposporium species to HIV infected
individuals and infants.
➢ The Foundation was awarded a grant by the Rockefeller Foundation to convene an
International Conference titled: ‘From Pandemic to Preparedness: Building Robust Public
Health Capacity in Nigeria’. The Conference was held from 8 to 12 May, 2017 at the
Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Centre, Italy. There has been a sustained creation of new
initiatives including the launching of a Think Tank for Translating Research to Innovation,
Strategies and Evidence for Policies in Nigeria.
As part of efforts to maintain an active academic environment, 27 inaugural lectures have been
delivered for this session, bringing the total number of Inaugural Lectures in the university to 426. In
addition, a University Lecture has been presented as well as 10 other lectures including
Matriculation Lecture, Alumni Lectures and Postgraduate School Discourses.
