In spite of the Super Eagles sterling performance in the World Cup qualifiers and its convincing defeat of Argentina – one of the world’s finest teams, Nigeria has dropped nine (9) places in the latest football ranking by the International Federation of Association Football ( FIFA ).

FIFA made this latest ranking known on Thursday, putting Nigeria at 50th position in the world and 8th in Africa.It can be recalled that Nigeria occupied the 41st position in the last ranking. This did not augur well for the die-hard fans of the Super Eagles as they expected the recent exploits of the team to have levitated the Eagles to more desirable position in the upward direction.


A few unexpected teams like Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo etc., ranked higher than Nigeria.

However, we are very hopeful that the forthcoming ranking by FIFA scheduled for 21st December, 2017 should hold more serendipitous prospects for our national team.

It is really amazing to see them all asking what criteria FIFA applies for the ranking when google is on their smartfones.

It just goes to show that many just want conversation rather than gaining knowledge.

Nigeria will definitely witness a major leap in FIFA ranking for defeating the Argentine's.

kjhova: There is a clear format guiding the FIFA rankings and the determinants including; the co-efficients of the teams playing, match type (FIFA WCQ or Friendly etc), period of the match relative to FIFA ranking date, movements on the ranking table due to other teams' performances and several other variables.

In short, If you have the last FIFA ranking and co-efficients of all the teams, and you have the scores of all FIFA graded matches played across the world since the last ranking date, you can calculate Nigeria's next ranking position yourself.

In conclusion, I think we may not rise much sha, given that most countries also played matches around that period and that our close competitors like Egypt, Tunisia and Senegal had good results in "competitive" games while we only won a "friendly" albeit against a highly rated Argentina side.

If the criteria of fifa ranking is anything to go by, then we should not raise an eyebrows. In the Nov ranking Nigeria is placed 50 n 8 in d world n Africa respectively[b]. If u check Nigeria drew 1-1 against Algeria which are below Nigeria in d ranking.[/b]..... Due to that fact we will lose points and Algeria will gain points for getting a draw against a team above them. Secondly, the friendly match was not competitive hence fifa didn't use it to grade the rankings.....

And cameroun didn't draw with Zambia?....

I wonder how and what criteria they use in making their rankings because Nigeria is far better than most of those teams ahead of us.

They can rank us last for all I care as long as our boys keep on delivering and get to at least the quarter finals of the upcoming world cup tournament.

FIFA rankings are done by cumulative of games over period of time. Also the kind of teams you beat affects your ratings.
For instance your time of bad results can pull your good results back. Also if you beat teams below you, you gain small points compared to when you beat teams ahead of you. So this is a straight forward compilation, no guess work, no wayo.

They were already above us in the last ranking. Cameroun is the reigning African champions, winners of a competition Nigeria didn't even qualify for. Fifa rankings use the last 48 months of performance.
