The weather condition currently experienced in the country has been said to portend no danger, but will rather ensure good agriculture harvest this year.

This was stated by the Assistant General Manager, Central Forecast Office (CFO) of Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Mr Okoloye Cyprain, in an exclusive interview with the Nigerian Tribune in his office in Oshodi, Lagos.

Okoloye, while dousing fears that the weather condition, with the rumoured acid rain, would mean much harm to the body, stated that rather than the feared damage to the body, the weather was good for agricultural yield.

He stated that the strong harmattan dust, which emanated from the Sahara desert in the north, had strong nitrates, as well as some other components that would mix with the rain when it falls and, as it goes into the ground, would form manure and act like fertiliser.

“This is what people do no know. The implication in agriculture is that it goes with good yields. So, we should expect good agricultural yields this year,” he explained. He insisted that any year there was no strong harmattan dust, there would not be good agriagriculturallds.

Okoloye explained that there was nothing unusual about the harmattan dust being experienced now, as the season usually starts from October/November to March every year, with rains starting in the south by March. The very early rain harvests in the month of March, he said, was usually very dirty, thus, dousing the fears that the dirty rain drops might be signs of the rumoured acid rain.
