Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest. (Read 2 Kings 4:1-7)
Here are seven lessons to learn from these.

1. Total Trust in God. You can’t trust God and get disappointed. You trust in God guarantees victory and success. The woman went straight to the man of God because she believes in God; she had no any other alternative but to call on God on the day of trouble. Her husband was among the servant of Elisha who must have been faithful during his service with God. That gave the woman courage to go and meet Elisha.

2. Do not despise the little you have. Many people don’t know they have what can make them great tomorrow right with them. God has already deposited something in you.The woman thought she had nothing, until she remembered that she had a little oil which later turns out to be great overflow of oil. She even called it “little oil”. Beloveth, that little oil in her house saved her and family from shame, embarrassment, disgrace, poverty, untimely death, loneliness. Because, if the creditor had come to take her two sons away not even one, she would have been so poor and lonely which could lead to her committing suicide.
The little in your hand can be something great and overflowing tomorrow. The little you have might just be a simple idea; it might be one simple thing you know how to do better than others. It could anything, just take a step of faith with it.
There is saying that Rome was not built in a day. A journey of a thousand miles starts with a step. Do something with the little you have and you would be amazed with the result.

3. Be friendly. As christian, we must let the light of Jesus shine in our life so that even our neighbors would be able to see the Jesus in us. The man of God told her to borrow empty vessel from everywhere she could, not excluding her neighbors too, because he know she could quickly get it fast and easy from her neighbors than anywhere else, forgetting that she might not actually get it if she’s unfriendly with her neighbors or have a bad character.
Elisha simple instruction to her simply mean“go and borrow empty vessel from anywhere you could get it and most especially go to your neighbors because even if you didn’t get it anywhere, it’s certain you’ll get it from your neighbors”. The woman must be a friendly woman, if not; nobody will be willing to give her any vessel. And for a woman to release her property to someone, especially if that person is unfriendly, you know what she could pass through.
She was able to get plenty of empty vessels because she maintained a good relationship with her neighbors.

4. Be a good listener. Every good listeners always emerge victorious because they pay attention to everything that is being said.The woman went to Elisha with a broken heart because the bible recorded that she cried unto Elisha which illustrates that she was grieved in heart, despite her condition then, she still maintained her peace and listen to every tiny detail of the instructions. Through her good listening, she was able to carry out the job successfully. As recorded, Elisha gave her six solid instructions which she was able to carry out successfully.
1. Go borrow vessels. (Not cups, not bailer)
2. Empty vessels. (Not filled with anything).
3. Do not gather just a few.
4. Shut the door behind you and your sons.
5. Pour the oil into all those vessels
6. And set aside the full ones.
It takes a good listener to be able to carry out those steps successfully.

5. Obedience is better than sacrifice . There is no second best option to disobedience, not even sacrifice. If the woman had not obeyed all what she was ordered to do, her two sons would have been caught into slavery till the debt has been fully paid. If the woman had rubbished what the man of God had said and later went her way to look for solution herself she would have fully paid the price of disobedience with her son by sacrificing her son for a debt. When one don’t obey, the outcome is always bad. No amount of sacrifice is the best alternative to a simple obedience.

6. Faith is not a risk but unbelief is. When you put faith to work, you are at risk because faith is not a risk, unbelief is. It’s very easy for the woman to walk out from Elisha because it make no sense at all considering what the woman said and what Elisha said she should do. She must have been thinking maybe Elisha will give her some money to pay her debt or go with her to the creditor to plead on her behalf. But none of this happened, he gave her a simple instruction that looks foolish in the eyes, but she believed because she had faith.
But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty. 1 Corinthians 1:27.

7. God rewards faithfulness. Whatever you sow, you shall reap.Any seed of faithfulness you sow, God sees it, it doesn’t matter if anybody did not see it. God sees it and he will reward you.
Elisha was able to help the woman because her husband was a faithful man. The faithfulness of her husband saved his entire family from poverty. If her husband had been an evil worker of God, Elisha may have found it hard to attend to her case or might not even attend to her at all. God rewarded the faithfulness of the man service to him by blessing is family with overflowing blessing.Brethren, I want to let you know that God is not a robber, he will reward every bit of your faithfulness towards men and for his service, and he will not forget your labor of love. God is not a man that he should lie or repent.
Whatever a man sow that he shall also reap, beloveth, make up your today to sow a good seed any where you go so that you can also reap your good fruits. If you haven’t surrender to Jesus Christ to help you be a new man, make up your mind today to surrender to him and you will shout hallelujah!These are seven lessons to learn from Elisha and the widow’s oil; I hope you were able to grab one or two things to apply in your daily work.
