In ancient Egypt, curses were placed on tombs, sacred objects and possessions to stop people from looting or disturbing them.

The curse is what will happen to anyone who doesn’t heed the warning.

The first people to fear mummy’s were Arabs who conquered Egypt in 641.

The Arab writer’s warned people never to tamper with the mummy’s or their tombs because they knew Egyptian’s practiced magic during the funeral ceremonies.

Inside of a sacred tomb contained ancient writings and paintings that showed mummy’s could return to the living and seek revenge.

The idea of curses being linked with mummy’s has intrigued people for centuries.

The first published book about an Egyptian curse was published in 1699 and hundreds more followed.

The most popular stories of a mummy’s curse was the real life opening of King Tutankhamen’s tomb in 1923 which captured the nation.



The curse doesn't care if you're a serious-minded archaeologist or an opportunistic thief and the spell is especially powerful if the mummy happens to be a pharaoh.

Over the years, there have been numerous reports of cursed archaeological sites, where excavators and tomb robbers began to experience strange sensations, sudden illnesses, and even death after coming in contact with a mummy or an ancient Egyptian artifact.

Curses were placed on tombs as safety measures.

If the body, possessions, or burial place of the deceased was disturbed, then they wouldn't be guaranteed a peaceful afterlife.

But those warnings didn't stop people from poking around in them.

King Tut Warns Archaelogists That "Death Shall Come On Swift Wings"




When King Tutankhamen’s tomb was found, journalists reported that the following inscription was near the door:


"Death shall come on swift wings to him who disturbs the peace of the King.”

In fact, there were several mysterious deaths surrounding the opening of Tut’s tomb.

The first and most publicized death was that of the Egyptologist Lord Carnarvon.

He and Howard Carter were the ones to open Tut’s tomb.

Carnarvon died a few months after the discovery from an infected mosquito bite on his cheek.

The death had an eerie tie to Tu, when an autopsy was performed on the pharaoh's body, a similar lesion was found on his cheek, when Carnarvon died, all of the lights in his house were rumored to have suddenly blacked out with no explanation.

Carnarvon wasn’t the only one to fall victim to Tut’s curse.

Howard Carter gave his friend Sir Bruce Ingham a paperweight made of a mummified hand, with a bracelet with the following inscription:


“Cursed be he who moves my body. To him shall come fire, water and pestilence."


After Ingham received this gift, his house burned down.

Once he had finally rebuilt it, it was hit by a flood.

George Jay Gould, Audrey Herbert, Hugh Evelyn-White, Aaron Ember, and Archibald Douglas Reed are also said to be victims of the curse.

Like Carnarvon, they all died mysteriously shortly after coming into contact with Tut’s mummy or artifacts within his tomb.









While working at the tomb Howard Carter, the lead of the project, sent a messenger to his house.

On arrival, he heard a faint cry and saw Carter’s canary being killed by a cobra, the sign of the Egyptian monarchy.

The incident was reported by the New York Times in December of 1922.

Out of the 26 people at the opening of the tomb six died from mysterious causes, although rumors greatly exaggerate this number.


Most of the Egyptian curses are metaphysical but in some cases booby traps and the use of poison did enforce the curse causing death or injury to those who entered.

‘All people who enter this tomb, make evil against this tomb and destroy it may the crocodile be against them in water and snakes against them on land. May the hippopotamus be against them on water and the scorpion against them on land.’






A young archaeologist Zahi Hawass learned the dangers of excavating an Egyptian tomb after working on the Kom Abou-Billou site.

On the first anniversary of the excavation his cousin died, then his uncle on the second anniversary and his aunt on the third.

Years later, while working in the Pyramid of Giza, he uncovered the curse that means,


‘All people who enter this tomb, make evil against this tomb and destroy it may the crocodile be against them in water and snakes against them on land. May the hippopotamus be against them on water and the scorpion against them on land.’

Hawass came to the belief mummy’s shouldn’t be displayed to the public but it was better than allowing people to enter the tombs.

I grabbed him by the shoulders and dragged him onto the couch.

Then I ran for the telephone."

Emery was diagnosed with paralysis of the right side of his body and was unable to speak.

He died the following day.

Tomb of Senmut



The curse written on the wall at the tomb of Senmut translates to mean, ‘His lifetime shall not exist on earth.’


The tomb was made for Queen Hatshepsut of Senenmut’s (also known as Senmut) royal adviser.

He was a powerful man of his time and allowed to build his tomb close to the one built for the Queen pharaoh which was a rare privilege for anyone of non-royal blood.

After the Queen died he was forgotten and the tomb never completed.

The paintings and subscription’s inside are well preserved, including the ancient curse.

Its not yet open to the public but efforts are underway to make it accessible.

Bahariya Oasis


An archeologist was assisting with removing two mummy’s from the Bahariya Oasis tomb and he was haunted by dreams of children during the procedure.

The dreams only stopped after the mummy of the father was reunited with the children at the museum.

Many people involved with removing mummy’s or traveling with them in their possession have been haunted by strange dreams until the mummy’s were no longer in their possession.

Some Egyptian writing wasn’t deciphered until the 19th century, so actual curses weren’t uncovered written inside tombs.

In 1699, there was one of the first written accounts of a Polish traveler who experienced terrifying visions of two specters while traveling with two mummy’s in the cargo.

The Polish man who had purchased two mummies from Alexandria, presumably to study them for medicinal purposes.

As he was sailing home across the Mediterranean Sea, he began to be haunted by two ghosts who suddenly appeared on the boat with a massive storm and the waters dangerously rough for days until the mummy’s were thrown overboard.

A Stolen Relic Haunts Its Thief


In 2004, a man visiting Egypt reportedly stole a relic from The Valley of the Kings, the same region that houses King Tut's tomb.

When he returned home to Germany, he was overcome by a fever which progressed to paralysis. The man died shortly after.

His stepson was convinced that the artifact was cursed, and returned the relic to Egypt’s Supreme Council for Antiquities in the hopes that his father’s soul would rest in peace.

King Tut's Curse Strikes Again


In 1972, King Tut’s curse seemingly returned with a vengeance.

Some of the artifacts from King Tut’s tomb were sent to the British Museum to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the tomb's discovery.

Dr. Gamal Mehrez, the director of antiquities at the museum in Cairo, died the night after he handled the artifacts that were to be sent to England.

But the curse didn’t stop there.

Many of the airmen who were aboard the aircraft that was carrying the artifacts to England fell victim as well.

Three of the men on the aircraft suffered from heart attacks after coming into contact with the artifacts.

One of the men had a heart attack at the same time every year the same day he flew aboard the plane with King Tut’s relics until one of the attacks killed him.

2013, a Manchester museum was haunted with an Egyptian statue that rotated 180 degrees every three days seemingly on its own.

The statue was in a glass case and untouched from everyone except from the curator who kept turning it back.

The museums curator claimed the ancient Egyptians believed if the mummy was destroyed then the statuette could be used as an alternative vessel for the spirit.

A time lapse video has been sped up to clearly show the statue moving without being touched.

Scientists offered another explanation claiming the friction of two surfaces could be moving the statue but regardless it is still really creepy.

A Mummy Might Have Sunk The "Titanic"





“The Unlucky Mummy” isn’t a mummy at all, but a “painted wooden mummy-board of an unidentified woman.”

This mummy-board is currently housed at the British Museum in London, but rumor had it, it got around in its day.

Apparently, during its early time at the museum, the staff would hear loud banging coming from the artifact.

One man took a photograph of the mummy-board and was horrified by the image that appeared once he developed the photograph.

The eerie events continued until a museum guard died of suspicious circumstances.

Believing the coffin was cursed, the museum wanted to get rid of it as quickly as possible, so it was sold to an American archaeologist.

He took the mummy-board with him onto his America-bound ship, the Titanic.





Some people speculate that the presence of the cursed mummy-board caused its disastrous sinking.

It's a thrilling tale, but one without any evidence: in reality, the mummy-board resided at the British Museum the entire time.
