There are lots of things to know before starting a fish farm which will include the conditions or factors necessary for sitting a fish pond, terms associated with fish farming which I will explain below but before I commence, I would simply define what fish farming is and all about.

FISH-FARMING: fish farming can be defined as the act of rearing fishes of different species or same species under a scientifically controlled condition in enclosed bodies of water such as ponds & stream for the sole purpose of selling/trading or for consumption.

1). Topography:
The shape of the land matters a lot in fish-farming because the shape of land allows the easy flow of drainage and filling the pond with water. The water must flow from a place that is higher than the pond so that the water can flow directly to the pond if not the need for pumps will arise and it will increase the cost of the project (some other expenditure not needed).
You can also site your fish pond on a flat or leveled ground but lots of soil must be removed to create the slope.
You need to consider the size of the land you intend to use to grow your fish farming business. Usually, a plot of land or two is great to start out a fish farming business. But where you don’t have the luxury of land space, you can start out in your backyard, and grow from there.

2). Location Of The Fish Farm:
When selecting the location for your fish farm, you need to consider its proximity from the nearest town, the security in the vicinity, the presence or absence of fish prey, and more.
Ensure the environment for growing your fish farm is ideal for your business to thrive.

3). Pond Planning, Size, Design, Construction, And Consideration:
The type of pond that you need to construct is very necessary, therefore, for a levee-type pond, a flat area that has access to a well could be used. But for a watershed pond, steeper areas near a natural source of water are to be used.
It’s usually best to contact the services of an aquaculture consultant. They’d get your full requirements, examine your goals, determine what you truly need, and ensure the construction work and general requirements of the fish ponds are properly met.

4). Adequate Water Supply:
There must be a constant supply of water of good quality and quantity The source of water supply to the fish ponds is important to proper development and maturity of your fish farm for commercial use. The best water supply for fish farming is the borehole water supply so it is important to have a proper borehole system built in the vicinity to ensure a reliable source of water supply. Other sources of water like lake, river, and stream are good too but in order to use it they must be free from bad smell, taste, color, and should not be too muddy because the water provides their habitat, oxygen, and food to the fishes and also create a means of waste discharge.

NOTE: You must know that rainwater and chemically treated water are totally out of the fish farming. They are not good at all, and cannot be recommended for standard use. So I would advise that you Get a steady flow of fresh water, so your pond can thrive.

5). Storage System:
the fishes feed and other items are to be stored in a cool and dry place, Also ensure they’re not exposed to little farm animals that could make holes in the bags and feed on them.

6). Availability of fast-growing fishes:
fingerlings or baby fish(es) for stocking a fish pond should be the type that can grow fast and mature within a short period of time. The use of improved varieties (breeds) in stocking fish pond makes fish farming more profitable for sales and consumption.

7). Type of Soil in the acquired land:
The type of soil used in fish farming is very necessary because the soil in the area must be fertile so as to supply nutrients to the fish(es). The recommended soil for fish farming is clay because of its capability to withhold water and it is very necessary for fish pond construction.
Note: soils like loamy, or sand with much gravel is not good at all for fish farming because it would not be able to hold water.

cool. A Good Knowledge Of Running The Farm:
“Knowledge is power”. You must have a sound knowledge of how to run an aquaculture business. It is advisable for you to attend a seminar on aquaculture, so as to boost your knowledge about fish farming cons and pros and everything it takes to turn out successful. In fish farming.
