10 Best Movies To Watch This Year 2018


1. "The Post"

Release date: January 12 (wide release date)

What it's about: The movie follows how "The Washington Post" covered the Pentagon Papers.

Why to see it: If you love Steven Spielberg, the director's latest is a testament to how great he is at what he does. Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks give some of their best performances. As my colleague Jacob Shamsian noted in his review, it's "a timely movie about the past."


2. "Fifty Shades Freed"

Release date: February 9

What it's about: The third and final chapter in the "Fifty Shades" franchise sees a married Ana (Dakota Johnson) and Christian (Jamie Dornan) stalked by her former boss, Jack. They'll also have to ward off Christian's former dominant, Elena (Kim Basinger).

Why to see it: If you've been following the franchise along for this one, you may as well head out for one final Valentine's Day outing with Ana and Christian. Love it or hate it, you know everyone is going to be discussing some of the film's dialogue and funniest parts. It's (hopefully) the final movie in the franchise.


3. "Black Panther"

Release date: February 16

What it's about: Remember the Black Panther character introduced in "Captain America: Civil War"? This movie will take place after the events of that movie as T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to take over for his father as the King of the fictional Wakanda. Of course, that's not going to go over so well as he butts heads with an old foe.

Why to see it: Fans have been waiting since his first comic book appearance in 1966 for the character get some recognition on the big screen. And what a spectacle it will be. The star-studded cast includes Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong'o, Michael B. Jordan, and "The Walking Dead" actress Danai Gurira.

And with Kendrick Lamar producing the movie's album, you know it's going to have some good tracks.



4. "Every Day"

Release date: February 23

What it's about: A 16-year-old girl named Rhiannon (Angourie Rice) falls in love with a spirit who wakes up every day in a different body.

Why to see it: It's based on the 2012 New York Times' bestseller of the same name. The story flips the traditional girl-meets-boy story on its head by making you contemplate love that isn't bound by gender.


5. "Red Sparrow"

Release date: March 2

What it's about: Based on a book of the same name, the film follows a Russian spy (Jennifer Lawrence) who falls for a CIA agent (Joel Edgerton) she is supposed to expose.

Why to see it: In a lot of ways, it looks like the next "Atomic Blonde" - a movie about an undercover, beautiful assassin kicking butt and taking names. If that's the case, we're here for it.

At the least, it looks like the Black Widow movie we deserved.



6. "A Wrinkle in Time"

Release date: March 9

What it's about: Meg Murry (Storm Reid) goes on a search for her father (Chris PIne) with the help of three celestial guides played by Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling.

Why to see it: Not only is the adaptation based on the bestselling book by Madeleine L'Engle, but director Ava DuVernay has given us critically-acclaimed movies "13th" and "Selma." The all-star cast includes Chris Pine, Reese Witherspoon, and Oprah. Yeah. Oprah is in this.



7. "Tomb Raider"

Release date: March 16

What it's about: Lara Croft goes on a search to find her father who has been missing for years. Her journey brings her to an island off the coast of Japan.

Why to see it: Honestly, we weren't convinced we needed a "Tomb Raider" reboot after Angelina Jolie's franchise. It's tough to make a good video game movie, but we love Alicia Vikander. You may know the Swedish actress for her performance as a chilling robot in the thriller "Ex Machina." We're excited to see her do more than whip out the video game character's iconic pistols.

Another reason to have high hopes? This film will be based on the 2013 game which served as a reboot to the franchise and was beloved by critics and fans alike.


8. "Pacific Rim: Uprising"

Release date: March 23, 2018

What it's about: The sequel will take place 10 years after Guillermo del Toro's 2013 movie. The sequel will follow new younger jaeger pilots who are going up against giant kaiju (monsters) attacking Earth.

Why to see it: The first movie was extremely underrated. And though del Toro isn't back to direct the sequel, we're excited to see "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" actor John Boyega in one of the lead roles along with Scott Eastwood. Boyega will be playing the son of Idris Elba's war hero character from the first movie.



9. "Ready Player One"

Release date: March 30

What it's about: In 2045, Earth is facing an energy crisis which has led to people to turn to a virtual world, the Oasis. When the creator dies, he leaves behind his massive fortune to whoever can find an Easter egg he left hidden in the Oasis. Years pass where no one has found any clues to the inheritance. One day, Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) stumbles upon one of three keys needed to find the treasure and suddenly everyone is on his trail.

Why to see it: We've been waiting some time for Ernest Cline's 2011 beloved debut novel to come to the big screen.

If you love the '80s and pop culture references, this movie will be full of them. All of the clues to the hidden treasure deal with that era. One of the highlights of watching the film's trailer was seeing how many popular video game, movie, and TV references you could spot. With Steven Spielberg behind the wheel, we're crossing our fingers that it's not a big letdown.


10. "A Quiet Place”

Release date: April 6

What it's about: A family lives a secluded, silent life on a farm as they hide from a supernatural evil that will come if they make any kind of noise.

Why to see it: Not only is the concept of this movie unique because of its use of sound, but we love that it stars real-life couple Emily Blunt and John Krasinski ("The Office". It's also directed by Krasinski.
