Anxiety and depression can be triggered by mindfulness, anti-anxiety medication, exercise, and mindfulness. However, certain kinds of food we consume can also these conditions.

Here are five foods that trigger anxiety/depression and suggestions for what to consume instead.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol in excess quantity can affect your sleep and worsen your anxiety and depression. The recommended is dosage: A drink a day for women, and two a day for men. It would be better if you go without it for days.

Toast

Toast prepared from white bread (processed white flour) quickly turns to blood sugar, making it inappropriate for anxiety/depression. This can lead to energy spikes that can be bad for anxiety and depression. Instead of white flour, go for whole-grain bread.

Coffee

Consuming coffee is bad for people who have anxiety or panic attacks because the caffeine in coffee can make you jumpy and nervous. It could also affect with your sleep. Abrupt withdrawal from caffeine can cause you to be moody. Gradual withdrawal with decaf is best.

Fruit Juice

Fruit juice is simply nutritious sugar-water. Instead of drinking fruit juice, eat fruits whole, so as to benefit from the fiber that fills you up and slows down how your blood takes in energy.

Energy Drinks

Consuming energy drinks can cause unusual heart rhythms, sleep issues, and anxiety. This is because it’s not always easy to know the sky-high caffeine levels hidden in ingredients like guarana. These beverages often contain loads of sugar or artificial sweeteners, too. Instead of energy drinks, drink water or eat fruit if you are thirsty.

Diet Soda

Though diet soda does not contain sugar, but drinking it isn’t completely safe. It contains caffeine which is not helpful for anxiety and depression.

Frosting

Frosting is loaded with around 2 grams of “trans fats” per serving, apart from the sugar. They’re linked to depression. They are also found in pizza dough, fried foods, crackers, cakes and cookies. Instead of these, eat the “good” kind you derive from foods like fish, olive oil, avocado, and nuts. Those can help boost your mood.

Soy Sauce

Soy sauce is for people who are sensitive to gluten and if you’re sensitive to gluten, it can cause anxiety or depression. It can affect your activity or level of productivity.
