Success is arguably the most highly-sought-after commodity in the human space. Virtually every human activity aims at hitting the target of one form of success or the other. Most humans undergo diverse professional training in order to bring home the bacon at the end of the day. Even our basic inherent instinct for self-preservation has a desire to succeed at its foreground. In fact, claiming and trying not to succeed is an attempt at succeeding at not succeeding. It just seems inescapable. Success being a resultant effect, there are indeed certain causes which midwife it that are germane irrespective of any sphere of life: Goal-setting, planning, working with the plan, persisting, and seeking improved ways of scoring those goals in that facet of life. When one has this antecedent, there is a deleterious tendency to revel in routine with the expectation that working on subsequent tasks, remaining unscathed by privileges and challenges of that next life phase would be effortless. Overconfidence confidently strolls in unchecked. To wake those asleep from their slumber, this article argues that overconfidence is harmful to the average human and distances him/her from further success.

Like a not-too-long snake that creeps into a house and makes itself comfortable at a hidden corner, overconfidence operates similarly. Although it appears like confidence, overconfidence is as venomous as a snake. As the term indicates, overconfidence is an excess of confidence; an exaggeration of one's capacity, aptitude or technical know-how, as the case may be. A good instance of it is Kickboxer Conor McGregor's decision to fight Boxer Floyd Mayweather few months ago, despite having infinitesimal experience in the boxing ring. His face got reshaped with Mayweather's fists. You know the rest. Overconfidence tells you "You can do it" regardless of minimal preparation and inexperience. Whereas confidence tells you "You can do it" based on your preparedness. Confidence is the mean of overconfidence and underconfidence; underconfidence, a bogus belief that "You cannot do it" inspite of your readiness, is equally as toxic as overconfidence.

More so, the subtlety of overconfidence as well as its attack from within make it a threat to our psyche. It is a false alarm that beckons on us to leap without looking. Overconfidence has the potential of getting you overly relaxed, less prepared than you ought to be, complacent, and closer to failure. Also, it often makes those under its grip credulous and often erroneously believe in the infallibility of certain methods such as science and physiogonomy. Echoing Writer David Hume's thought, there is no necessary connection between a cause and effect. That that business strategy or procedure worked the last time doesn't necessarily entail it would work the next time; that a good number of members of a family have defective character traits does not necessarily imply that all have or would have them; and neither does her beauty nor his hunky stature translate to character and prudence respectively. Supposing otherwise is suggestive of overconfidence in the conventional modus operandi and enthrones misjudgment.

However, overconfidence remains a factor that can militate against your all-round success if it is not nipped in the bud. The manner in which it infiltrates one's mind and discreetly affects decisions cum actions proceeding therefrom often makes it an unknown foe or enemy. Repelling overconfidence by being always prepared and open-minded increases your proximity to successful outcomes.

CC: Lalasticlala. Due to the silent way overconfidence kills dreams and leaves the careers of many moribund, this article comes at an appropriate time to expose this often unknown enemy. Our current national impasse is not unconnected with this virus. Nairalanders would indeed gain from the wisdom which lay therein. Kindly forward to front page. Thank you!

And what's that?
1)your thread is in the wrong section... Move it to Education or general...
2) You have spammed the first page of your own post, it won't enter front page even if you invoke the gods...

#Advice... Enumerate the points in your post, create a new thread in the right section, allow the thread to grow naturally by the comments of others.
Some threads that were created in 2015, finally got to front page in 2018. But while such threads were languishing in their respective sections, people were actively commenting on the threads, thereby increasing the pages.
