My Corolla Sport ‘04 Won’t Start Until I Press The Accelerator To Pump Fuel Into by topsy509(m): 3:49pm On Jan 31, 2018
Hello House,

My Corolla Sport normally exhibit cold start (it takes time to start). I met my Mechanic and he confirmed that the problem is the fuel pump. He stated that the pressure from the pump is weak and it’s not pumping the right amount of fuel into the car thus the slow start.

I have since changed the fuel pump and the problem has kind of manifested in another way. Now, the car will start and then go off, I will need to press the accelerator to pump in fuel before it can finally start. And if I lift pressure from the accelerator too soon, the car will go off.

Please enlighten me on what could be the cause. I don’t want to waste any money on what might not be the problem.

Thank you

When u depress the accelerator, you are opening the throttle for air to come in, not fuel.

The computer only sends more fuel to balance the air !!!

So you have a problem with air flow!

Run a scan. Though your pcm might not be stored with any fault error relating to this. Carry out an extensive engine tune up. Also check idle air control valve

I suspected as such.

Any modern car owner needs to have a reader as part of his tool. Most, not all, of these issues can be troubleshooted at leisure if you have your own reader.

Some issues may manifest itself sporadically and clear up without storing a code. I suspect a throttle position sensor.

The UltraGauge EM Plus & UltraGauge MX can display 78+ possible standardized gauges*. Gauge selection is completely customizable. The actual gauges available are vehicle dependent. If your vehicle supports any of the gauges listed, then the gauge will be available for display by UltraGauge.

The Ultragauge EM Plus does not support Manufacturer specific gauges such as Transmission temperature, the Ultragauge MX does. Please see the MX product page for more information.
