Although you may not be aware of it, the world is dominated by a handful of corporations who have bought-out the rights and ownership of other major brands.

It is very common for one big company such as Amazon to have several other large companies under its control. In fact, there are about a dozen companies that own all of the other ones… it’s true! Here’s a look some companies you may not realise are owned by other ones.

Hotels.com

Hotels.com is one of the country’s favourite websites for booking hotel rooms online at the most competitive rates. With over 85 websites in 34 languages and 325,000 hotels, it is clearly a leader in the travel industry.

But, did you know that Hotels.com is owned and operated by Expedia? That’s right! The American travel company famous for its Expedia offers and Expedia discounts bought out Hotels.com to tighten its hold on online travel services.

PayPal

Founded and created in part by Elon Musk, the SpaceX entrepreneur, PayPal is the world’s leading online payment gateway which offers a worldwide online payments and money transfer service.

I bet you already knew that, however, I bet you didn’t know that it’s owned by eBay. It’s true, in October 2002 – only four years after PayPal launched – eBay bought the company for $1.5 billion.

YouTube

YouTube – the world’s largest video sharing website – was created by three former PayPal employees in February 2005 and rapidly grew to be one of the internet’s foremost websites.

What you may not realise is that YouTube is owned by Google, who recognised the potential of the website very early on and bought it in November 2006 for $1.65 billion… that’s a pretty decent amount of money to sell your company for after just over a 18 months!
