Convulsion: Step-by-step Procedure In Managing Convulsion. by Mariovictony(m): 11:42am On Mar 01, 2018
Convulsion is a sudden, violent, irregular movement of a limb or of the body, caused by involuntary contraction of muscles and associated especially with brain disorders such as epilepsy, the presence of certain toxins or other agents in the blood, or fever in children. Convulsion can also be said to be a medical condition where body muscles contract and relax rapidly and repeatedly, resulting in an uncontrolled shaking of the body. Because epileptic seizure is often a symptom of convulsion, the term convulsion is sometimes used as a synonym for seizure.

However, not all epileptic seizures lead to convulsions, and not all convulsions are caused by epileptic seizures. This abnormal health condition occurs mostly in children and occasionally with adults. Convulsion on its own is not a disease but a reaction to abnormal conditions like severe infection, very high fever, digestive problems, serious worm infestations, metabolic disorders, brain dysfunctions and tumours, head injury, inhalation of chemical agents among others.

Causes of Convulsion

Convulsions are often caused by some sort of electrical activity mishap in the brain. Oftentimes, the cause cannot be pinpointed. Convulsions can be caused by chemicals in the blood, as well as infections like meningitis or encephalitis. A very common cause of convulsions is fever. Other possibilities include head trauma, stroke or lack of oxygen to the brain, drug abuse. Alcohol usage, choking, electric shock, heart disease, low blood sugar, poising, Very high blood pressure (malignant hypertension) and stroke. Sometimes the Convulsion can be caused by genetic defects or brain tumour and deficiency of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine).
