“Those cattle are female. They are coming with pregnancy. With that we are expecting 4,000 cattle after their delivery in the state. The cattle will arrive from Mexico. These cattle are not regular ones we have in the country. The species we are bringing can produce meat and milk. No shitting. Thought they were gonna produce Gold and Silver. Stupid country with an inane President and bemused governors. 1 Like |

Good initiative. The Nigerian breeds are better in terms of lean meat. The sokoto Gudali, white fulani and white bororo are amazing breeds. Giving the level of care they receive and they still thrive. These foreign breeds will not even yield. Ranching is good but expensive. That is why grazing reserves are still in vogue even in developed countries. Countries that practice ranching actually subsidize each cattle per head. In europe each cow is paid a subsidized with $2 per day to keep the cost of meat products low. Imagine a farmer with 100 cows, he would require a plot of land per 10 cows minimum. The yearly cost of leasing this land has to be divided by these cows per head to cover this cost. Cost of feeding a cow per day, 500 - 1000 naira, a year 365k per cow. In 2 years 700k, add the cost of land lease. Can we afford to buy cows for 700k? These are the factors to consider. 1 Like |

They will die and miscarry from the stress and weather. It's too far and too hot. Cross breed high performance with local hardy breeds to give a good performing hardy breed adapted for Nigeria. We've tried it in Nigeria and it didn't work 1 Like |

It boggles the mind what sort of rubbish passes for "governance" in Nigeria. What do politicians and public sector employees know about animal husbandry? Why is a state government getting involved in what would be better left to the private sector? Is Akwa Ibom's government so lacking in other high-priority tasks that this is the most pressing thing they could come up with? And just what is the track-record of Akwa Ibom's state-run enterprises in the first place? All I see here is an opportunity to engage in looting through a "populist" gesture that exploits the ignorance of the electorate. There are eminently solid reasons why big ranches with imported cows are not to be found in southern Nigeria - most notably the endemic trypanosomiasis throughout the region - and nothing in this report suggests that there's anything special about these cows which would make them particularly resistant to the disease. Besides, the Akwa Ibom state government could just have easily extended credit guarantees to experienced, successful private-sector farmers, rather than plunging into a business it knows nothing about. I am almost 100% certain that the real motivation behind this is to steal in US Dollars through the usual Nigerian technique of inflated invoicing. The pity is that the scam will not only work, but the people who will cheer the loudest and hardest for it - while accusing critics and doubters of being "haters", "afonjas", "abokis", etc. - will probably be the ones being ripped off themselves. I'm betting that not a single one of these cows will be alive and breeding in 10 years. 3 Likes |
