Illegal Harassment And Arrest Of Oau Students. by TemiGod(f): 10:41pm On Mar 21, 2018
It all started around 10 in the morning when the porters and hall warden of moremi hall (a female students hostel) started nailing the rooms and since we no longer have student union, a group of concerned male students came to our halls of Resident to fight for what was right for us because though we are on break, final year students are busy know their projects and moreover, teaching practice, posting, swep and siewes is still going on for some students which the school management is fully aware of. when the porters saw that they could not resist the male students that came to our rescue,(about 7 of them), they called on mopol officers who when they came didn't even wait to hear our side of the story, manhandled those guys and bundled them up like thieves and forcefully carried them in a white van. while all this was going on, they didn't allow his take pictures or videos, anyone caught with phone was also manhandled and treated like a thief, that was how they manhandled and bundled up a faculty rep( Adeniyi John) from faculty of tech who was taking videos with his phone and was only concerned about the welfare of the females in faculty of tech who reside in Moremi hall and is now being accused of protesting which he is innocent of. He was not the only one who was wrongly accused and manhandled, a female Resident who was only expressing her pains was almost beaten up(which she sustained injuries from) and taken away if not for the intervention of other female students who prevented it from happening. The funniest of all is that since they school has been on break, there as been intermittent supply of water and NO supply of light to all halls of residence and yet they still do this to us.
we don't also like it here!
we don't like it that our counterparts have been on break for the past one month and we have no break at all!
we don't like it that we have to live in this harsh conditions despite the fact that you were the ones that engaged us with swep throughout the break period!.
we want justice for the guys who came to fight for us who knew we could not do anything to resist the porters, they are our heroes
we want their immediate release!
they gave voice to our grievances and they don't deserve what they got in return!. one can only just wonder why they didn't go to awo hall to try this with the guys,oh!, I think I know why, because they know they will never leave in one piece then the came to the female hall cause they know they won't do anything.
our demands!
1) that the students be released unconditionally and apology should be made to the various party involved for the unruly and inhumane treatment given to them and no restrictions on their e-portal or studentship (because that is the latest way of punishment our vc knows)
2) that we the female students be let back into the halls of residence with light and water restored
3) removal of prof. ogunbodede the unruly vc.

please let this trend on twitter and all social media

A group, Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of five students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) who were arrested and subsequently arraigned.
ERC, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Hassan Soweto, accused the Eyitope Ogunmodede-led management of deliberate assault on the fundamental human rights of the students.
The five students, Gbenga Olaniran, Oyedeji Samson, Olajide Adedamola, Jimoh Oladipupo and Adeniji John, were on Thursday arraigned at the Ife Magistrate Court after their arrest 24 hours earlier.
The school accused them of assaulting a university official.
Students and journalists were denied access to the court room by the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt from Opeyemi Oladunjoye, the acting Students’ Union security officer present in court, that the arraigned students were granted bail. The bail terms for each of the students include N500, 000 bond and provision of two sureties, who must be civil servants of level 11 and above and who are tax payers.
ERC said the move is a calculated attempt by the school management to silence dissent from the students.
“They were arrested on Wednesday 21 March 2018 while protesting against attempts by the authorities of the University to forcefully evict from hostels students who stayed back on campus during the break to undergo Teaching practice and Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). They have been remanded at the medium security prison, Kosere Ile-Ife, after appearing before Hon. Magistrate F.1 Omisade of Magistrate court Ife today Thursday 22 march 2018.
“But their travail is actually part of a long process of orchestrated assault on the fundamental rights of students by the despotic Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ogunmodede and members of his kitchen cabinet who are hell bent on silencing dissent voices on the campus. So far, several students who have either spoken out against fee hike or participated in protest actions over bad welfare conditions have been suspended. In 2017, ERC National Secretary Omole Ibukun and other student activists were suspended and the Students Union banned following a students’ protest against poor welfare conditions.”
ERC called for the reinstatement of the five students and other student leaders suspended by the school authorities.
The group also accused the police of being used as tool to harass students.
“We therefore demand the unconditional reinstatement of the ERC National Secretary, Omole Ibukun and all victimised students activists of the University. Also we demand the restoration of the proscribed students union and a halt to all attacks on democratic rights.
“The five (5) students were arraigned on trumped up 3-count charges (misdemeanor, breach of peace and assault) today Thursday 22 March 2018 before Hon. Magistrate F.I. Omisade of the Magistrate court Ife who remanded them in prison after granting them bail with onerous conditions attached including two (2) sureties on grade level 14 with five hundred thousand naira (N500, 000) bail bond each. These onerous conditions are meant to keep them in prison for as long as possible.
“The conditions are also disproportionate to the charges levelled against these five students and show to what extent the police and the judiciary in Osun State have been seriously compromised by the OAU authorities in its bid to ensure that these five activists are kept behind bars. In particular, we accuse the Osun State Commissioner of Police of using his men as the private thugs of the OAU vice chancellor to harass students and members of staff. This is not new. The OAU authorities has a history of using the police and the court to clamp students and workers leaders in prison on trumped up charges.”
ERC urged the public to stand in defence of the students.

Students are denied access to the court room while the police men forcefully chased students from the court premise.

just because this is not bbnaija, nobody is commenting, the mods are doing nothing about this. Just so you know the cries and pains of those students are on your head because they are wrongly being accused of a crime they know nothing of the worst of it all is that they are not being tried freely, students were not allowed to enter the court room and were chased with tear gas from the court house and now they have to spend three weeks in a prison. nobody prays to ever know what's a Nigerian prison is like especially when you are innocent. one of the students who is illegally detained, his dad is currently sick and funds of #8.5 million for surgery is still being sought from the public. where would such get #500,000 for bail and moreover, whose account will the money for bail go to totalling #4million?

I beg on the mods to move this to front page so that those students will be released unconditionally and apology should be made to them for their illegal detainment. pls mynd44 fynestboi, Richiez , olawalebabs, Fynestboi OAM4J , Mynd44 MissyB3.

[22/03, 9:27 p.m.] ‪+234 ‬: Highlights from today's court arraignment of OAU students:

•The arrested students were transferred to the court facility as early as 8:00am to prevent students' intervention at the police station in the early hours of today.

•Students and journalists were denied entry into the court premises, as those that already occupied the premises were identified by the school security committee and forcefully chased out from the court premises

•The Nigerian police force claimed they have orders to shoot students if they attempt to go against their restrictions

•The court proceeding started without a legal representative and witness to stand for the accused students.

•The only people that were granted access are the hall warden, porters and even DSA officials who were not witnesses of the event but came to defend their paymasters the deeds of their paymasters.

•The court trial was secret and not transparent

•The case was adjourned till April 3 while the judge gave bail conditions of paying a sum of #500,000 each with two civil servants of level 12 who are regular tax payer's to stand as sureties while the students would remain in Koshere prison till the next court sitting or when bail is granted

•The Police force sprayed tear gas to dispel students and sympathisers from the court entrance while they conveyed the accused students in a convoy of three vans to Koshere prison

•They swayed guns to disperse students as they conveyed them out of the court premise while one of the arrested students displayed his handcuffed hands through the window.

•Indications of possible eviction in Awo, as former hall chairman who has been absent for a while, in company of other students breaks open the locked gate of Awo with claims of acting on the order of the management after a negotiation meeting.

Please endeavour to rebroadcast this as we take further actions.

*RE: REPORT OF HARASSMENT, ASSUALT AND INVASION AT MOREMI HALL, OAU ILE-IFE.*

*Dunnex writes...*

'In a time of deceit, speaking the truth is a revolutionary act' - George Orwell

This is a response to the circulated memorandum of the OAU security unit regarding brutality, harassment, assault and illegal arrest of students who resisted the forceful eviction that took place at the Moremi hall in the early hours of yesterday.

While it is not a new occurrence to Nigerians that public officers have mastered an act of calling a red colour, white and giving all sorts of embarrassing excuses to defend their wrongdoings. In fact, if the Presidency could have blamed his inability to access office on rodents, while the JAMB counterparts supported hallucinatory remarks with the farce that animals consumed public funds, I don't think it should be a surprise, when OAU management laid false claims to justify the illegal arrest of students while available media evidences shows contrary acts.

While I believe it is necessary to hold public officers responsible for their actions and inactions with reasons for such. It is a compulsory obligation on my part, as a progressive and patriotic citizen to examine the given reasons under a microscopic lens of critical analysis and test it's strength on a balance of logic- If it will not fall flatly like Naira fell against dollar.

In accordance with the first paragraph of the memorandum which claims that an order was given, to hall porters, by the hall warden of Moremi hall, a person of Mrs. Adeyemo B.A, to evacuate debris, clean rooms and instructions to students to vacate the hostel in order to facilitate the resumption of incoming students.

In the usual manner, their deed was polished in the best manner such that the public observers is wrongly convinced of the real events while they blackmail the arrested students cheaply, especially, for those who are not witnesses of the event but surfacing video footages and witnesses claims have further proven that the school security unit, for reasons, best known to them have refused to explain other deeds of the evaders, such as; Throwing of properties from the topmost floor to the ground and also jamming of room doors with planks, nails and hammers in such a way that disfigures the doors- which I consider as vandalism of school properties and for the sake of the records, it is imperative to put to details that the impression created by the security unit that they came to disrupt a peaceful eviction of students, is a false impression.

Of course, we are all aware of that an eviction cannot be done calm and peaceful, the eviction wasn't done without coercion on the residents, in fact, some of their properties were recorded to have been thrown from the topmost floor. This is to show that the timely intervention of the Students' Union Action Committee was born out of the necessity to defend the interest (properties) of students who themselves constituted the committee at a Congress and a total contrast to what the school security unit made it seem.

Therefore the cheap but ridiculous blackmail should not be unexpected to us as most of us anticipated it before the release. In fact, students' blackmail is the only tool of the management whenever they want to silence students who serve as resistance to their inhumane policies. Even if we all forget, history would never do. It should be recalled of the case of the Angola hall Chairman who was blackmailed in a national newspaper by the University Vice-chancellor while he affirmed that he was no longer a student of the university due to poor academic performance which later turned out to be false.

Personally, I wonder what moral justification such entities carry to repeat the same thing and expect students to believe it? In fact, it is equally important that the highest percentage of the DSA's release during the last session, wasn't to address the poor welfare conditions or to tell students about their inability to provide a students' I.D card for a session while the money has been collected, but to threaten students to desist from joining progressive movements and release the portal results of students they consider 'erring'. - A proper analysis drawn from this shows a great sense of cowardice.

Without dwelling much on video evidences, a simple logical analysis and numerical comparison would further expose the falsity of their claims.

The security unit claimed that the students' action committee members held the hall warden hostage. Personally, I hate liars but I respect the intelligent ones because I believe it is an intellectual ridicule for one to be told an unintelligent lie. To my best of knowledge, hostages are people that are captured in a closed environment but everything that transpired at Moremi hall with the so-called staffs happened at the front of the hostel where mass of students gathered, then how come *a PERSON WAS HELD HOSTAGE IN AN OPEN ENVIRONMENT?* In fact, I would implore the security unit to provide the location details of where she was held hostage while I am sure nothing can prove such reverse of logic.
On this note, I have openly rejected my own share of the intellectual ridicule and I am sure other students would reject theirs by following suit

For the sake of brevity, the issue of assault, harassment and brutality needs not be over-emphasized as the video footages have totally proven the the claims of the university is a total reverse of what transpired.

Before my ink runs out, I use this medium to join the mass of Great ife students in demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the arrested students and also the reinstatement of all suspended students. This short piece might remain inconclusive without ending with the words of Gani Fawehinmi(SAM) which says; *'In a battle between the conscienceless power and the powerless conscience, the former may appear to win at first, but the latter prevails.*

*Dunnex Samuel*
