a. Monogamous Marriage. It’s the type of marriage that has to do with a man married only one wife as husband and wife.

It is becoming the most common type of marriage in Nigeria and the world at large.



b. Polygamous marriage. This type of marriage involves a man or woman and two or more spouse.

The two types of polygamous marriage are... polygamy that is a situation where a man marries two or more wives, and polyandry, which is a situation where a man marries more than one husband at a time.

Polyandry is not common in Nigeria.

Polygamy was common in our traditional society because, it was then seen as an achievement. Even, it is still common in the Islamic form of marriage, where a man is expected to marry up to four wives.

THE STEPS INVOLVED IN MARRIAGE ARE :-

a. First stage. The two persons (male and female) have to see each other and develop interest.



b. Second steps. Courtship, this is the period of proposal and acceptance of marriage .

c. Third step. Engagement, this can also be called betrothal. It occurs after careful investigation by both parents: that is the parents of the girl and the parents of the man into the health records of both individuals wanting to get married and the kind of family they both come from.

This takes place at the family house of the girl where both families will meet for the betrothal.
