A shocking video of Barack Obama has been making the rounds on the internet showing the former president calling Donald Trump a 'total and complete dips***'.

If you didn't know any better, you might think the video is real. 

In actuality, what appears to be Obama's voice is actually words spoken by 'Get Out' director and writer Jordan Peele.

Peele's voice and mouth were digitally inserted into the video using a sophisticated, but increasingly commonplace, technology that's powered by artificial intelligence, called 'deepfakes'.     

'We're entering an era in which our enemies can make it look like anyone is saying anything at any point in time — even if they would never say those things,' 'Obama' says in the video. 

'So, for instance, they could have me say things like, I don't know, [Black Panther's] Killmonger was right, or Ben Carson is in the sunken place,'

'Or, how about this: Simply, President Trump is a total and complete dipshit'.   

Peele and his production company, Monkeypaw Productions, as well as BuzzFeed, made the video to convey the dangers of deepfakes. 

Deepfakes are digitally-altered videos that use sophisticated machine learning algorithms to create human masks that are then overlaid on top of real footage.  

In many cases, the technology has been used to create AI-assisted porn of Hollywood's leading ladies.  

Experts have warned that the technology is poised to be the 'future of fake news' or as technologist Aviv Ovadya said it can make anyone 'appear as if anything has happened, regardless of whether or not it did'.  

BuzzFeed said it took around 56 hours to make the video using programs like Adobe After Effects and FakeApp. 

FakeApp lets anyone create their own deepfakes videos via an easy-to-use app that can be downloaded directly to your desktop computer. 

Deepfakes hobbyists have used the controversial video-editing technology to create short clips of world leaders, including Trump, Russian president Vladimir Putin as well as presidential candidate and former first lady Hillary Clinton. 

Experts warn the videos could be realistic enough to manipulate future elections and global political as soon as 2020.
