Rap Legends Of The Last Century - Drop Your Respect and Comments by AjanleKoko: 1:36pm On May 18, 2010
I'm starting this thread, for the purists who have followed hip hop from its origins.
I'm talking about those who jammed Eric B & Rakim, Run DMC, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, or bobbed their heads to Ill Al Skratch, Marley Marl, KRS-One, Guru (God rest his soul), A Tribe Called Quest, Das EFX, Jungle Brothers, Jeru, and all those great philosophers.

Let's talk about the age of the adidas, not the stretch limos and the video hos. Not the TI/Li'l Wayne/YoungMoney crew. Let's talk about when rap meant pure lyrical skills, the age of the turn table wizards.

Okay o.
My intention was to talk about the MCs and DJs from back in the day, before the whole thing pieces grin

Anyways let me start with my personal all-time fav DJ, Pete Rock.

Remember the tribute to Heavy D's backup man, Trouble T Roy, way back in '92? The one with the distinct horn flavour. With CL Smooth dropping the verses? Yep, that was Pete Rock.

In the early 1990s, we knew him as the horns maestro. Check out ADOR's 'Let It All Hang Out (1991)'. You might know it.

Asides his many collabs with CL Smooth, he did a lot of solo stuff, and was particularly a remix specialist. Mary J. Blige's 'Reminisce', featuring, of course, CL Smooth, House of Pain's 'Jump Around', Biggie's 'Juicy', Public Enemy's 'Shut 'Em Down', and even Kanye West's 'Heard Em Say' all have a version that has the line 'Another Pete Rock Remix'.

You can check out http://www.discogs.com/artist/Pete+Rock if you want to know more about his work.

Grew up listening to Rakeem, KRS-One, Kool Moe Dee, Scarface and The Ghetto Boys, Ice Cube, Eazy E,Snoop canine Dog. I will say that was the gangsta rap era. Rap then was more of tales that were like movies, no one raps about Hoes and stretch Hummers grin grin grin. it was either you was getting jacked or getting chased by the police  angry angry angry
You cant blame the new guys for what they talk about, its all about their influences. I think they are good too I particularly like Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, Drake, Wale, IceBerg Slim, Ice Prince, Vector.

My fav lyricist then was Rakeem

Come on AjanleKoko,
You are seriously breaking my heart when you dare to go back in the days when rap was rap and not some freaking tattooed little kids all high on God knows what with autotuned voices like Lil' wayne , With out mentioning the greats like NWA ( Niggers with Attitude) or Tim Dog, EPMD and the then humble LLCool J.

I still remember Pete Rock & CL smooths tribute song to one of the boyz in the group of Heavy D and the Boyz.
Great days those were boy. Even Heavy D also held it down back then with Now we found love. Nice track. MC Hammer was kind of a confusion for me but he still made mad sense with Hammer time.

Gangster rap's history will ever be complete without NWA's "Always into Something" or Public Enemy's Enemy of state.

Goodness time flies like a UFO now adays, can't believe its already over 20 years that i've been listening to rap when it was still rap.
wink wink

I am not a hip hop head hence i am a bit selective of rap songs i listen to (but i listen to every bit og naija hip hop o).
One of the best rap songs i ever heard was MY MIND IS PLAYING TRICKS ON ME - GHETTO BOYS.
spent nights learning the lyrics barely weeks after it came out and sang along on my walkman with it on auto repeat.
Still get goose bumps now hearing that song.
They don't do them as well again.
computer effects is ruining music.

Can i kick it? Yes you can.

A great group. Q Tip, Ali Shaheed Mohammed, Phife Dawg and the occasional Jerobi.

I left my wallet in EL Segundo, Can I kick it, We've got Jazz, Bonita Applebum, Check the Rhyme, Electric Relaxation, Award Tour . . .
Those were the jams that made my playlists in the early 90s.

semid4lyfe:

See this dude. Back in my uni days, I ran a pirate radio station on campus, along with some buddies, DJd at shows and parties, was even part of a band for a while, with one dude who is now a very popular home video actor. You go sabi am but I no go mention im name. Let's just say he is the one of the few in the Yoruba movie circuit that isn't from a mechanic or agbero background.
na GPA crisis force my retirement grin

My next subject: Kool G Rap, of Kool G Rap and DJ Polo fame. Another alumnus of Marley Marl's school of rap.

Remember the Heavy D joint of 92, Don't Curse? Featured Q Tip, Phife Dawg, Big Daddy Kane, Pete Rock, and a relatively unknown Jigga (yes o!). Kool G Rap was on that joint.
He started out with DJ Polo, and they dropped 3 albums, Live & Let Die, Wanted Dead or Alive, and Road To The Riches. His solo career I think had one relatively successful album - 4,5,6, featuring Nas on a track 'Fast Life'.

Kool G Rap provided the foreword for the 2009 book How to Rap: The Art & Science of the Hip-Hop MC, also providing insight into his multisyllabic rhyming technique. He's also credited by Wikipedia as the first rapper to introduce mafioso content into his lyrics, even before Ice T or NWA.

Now I'll leave you guys with an easy trivia. Which group dropped that song that had the chorus line 'This is how we chill for '93 till . . . '?

wink wink wink

Dr Dre feat Snoop Dogg - Deep Cover
NWA - 100 miles and runnin'

Another piece of trivia, just to get the memory juices flowing: I guess everybody knows the song 'He Got Game' by Public Enemy. Soundtrack single for the movie by same name, featuring Denzel.

That song was sampled from a 60s bluegrass track, done by which artist, and what was the song name? Also, that song was also on the score for an Oscar-winning movie in the 90s. Which movie was that?

Nice one.

My next subject: Naughty by Nature. Latifah's boys. Abi una young kids no sabi NBN as well?

I won't write much about them, apart from the fact that these dudes were the undisputed anthem kings of the '90s.

O.P.P, Hip Hop Hooray, Uptown Anthem, Ghetto Bastard, Feel Me Flow, etc. They were the only rap ground to represent full time on the pop charts, while maintaining their credibility. I salute them.
