Holiday In Tx Us by ayomifull(f): 7:42pm On May 21, 2010
I am taking a 2 weeks holiday in US with my 2 kids in August. I have booked our flight to Houston because the ticket is a bit reasonable. I am wondering if people who live there can advise of places that would be of interest to my 7 yr old boys and if there are other states not too far that we could also visit that wont cost us much to fly to and back to our base for our return.
Re: Holiday In Tx Us by Bossman(m): 11:45pm On May 21, 2010
Do you know anyone in Houston? If so, they will probably be in the best position to give better advice. I believe there is a theme park and water park in Houston, I am sure thay have a zoo, and the children's museum.

Here is a google search results. Lots of things for kids to do here in Chicago, however it's too far from Houston.

You will likely need to rent a car to get around. Houston is not one of those major cities with massive transportation system with busses/trains like New York, Chicago, etc. Unless may be if you are staying downtown. Do you know anyone in any other US state? Dalls is the closest large city that I am aware of. Houston and Dallas both have a very large concentration of Nigerians though. So, I hope some of the Naija folks based in those areas can chime in and offer some advice before you travel date.

You may want to look into taking a trip to Disney in Orlando Florida. Your kids will certainly love that. It's not close to Houston though. So, you will have to fly there. If I may ask, can you change/cancel your tickets and fly into Orlando/Miami Fla instead.

I lived in Sugarland Tx for five years. absolutely one of the most beautiful cities in the U.S. Trust me your kids will love looking at the beautiful homes there for a start. You can go to kemah, its an exciting theme park for both kids and parents. There is another place in town, its on Beechnut Rd, it has lots of water slides that the kids will enjoy too. Don't forget to visit Galeria Mall for fabulous shopping experience. They have Ice skating ring right in the middle of the mall where kids can have skatin lessons, you don't have to buy the skate, they provide one. Also take them to incredible Pizza on highway Six in sugarland, lovely place for kids to eat assortment of pizzas and other varieties of food and play games at the same time. They will love Dave and Bursters too, or chucky cheeses. Try "Six Flags" too. The beauty of Houston is that you don't have to travel far to get all the fun. You have almost everything in town. Here are some other places. The aquarium, THe houston Zoo. will give more info as i remember them

why on earth will you want to do Holiday in Houston, Tx?

This is like doing holiday in Niger Delta.

umm. so much for Holiday:

You see thats all Houston has to offer. You are a better off in Lagos!

since you going US anyway, better you go to Disney Land in Orlando as suggested.

Normally I don't reply post written by small brained posters, , If she had wanted to go to Florida, I am sure she is smart enough to figure that out by herself, she asked for advice in Texas and that is exactly what she wrote, but its obvious that you have not widened your horizon enough to realise that all holidays in the U.S does not have to end in Disney land.
Re: Holiday In Tx Us by oncolor: 9:03pm On May 23, 2010
The perfect place for kids would be the Schlitterbahn water park in Galveston, that must be one of the most exciting places for 7 year old boys and their parents too! and it is only about 1 hour drive from houston

http://www.schlitterbahn.com/gal/

If you are upto to some driving, San Antonio is not very far off, just about 3 hours from houston and there you have lots of attractions too like the massive Seaworld and the riverwalk in downtown San Antonio.

Spain is worse than Nigeria when it comes to crimes. Your chances of been robbed in Barcelona is 100% compared to being robbed in Lagos.

Houston is clearly no Holiday spot for kid, you see what is available yourself below

looking at the beautiful homes there for a start = we have that in Lekki, Abuja

it has lots of water slides that the kids will enjoy too = we have that in Waterparks

They have Ice skating ring right in the middle of the mall where kids can have skatin lessons = we have that in VI

Also take them to incredible Pizza on highway Six in sugarland, lovely place for kids to eat assortment of pizzas
= ofcourse there is Domino Pizza in Yaba.

I'm sorry but I won't recommend you come to Houston in August. If you think Nigeria is Hot, come to Houston in August and feel what 100 degrees

with 100% humidity feels like. Your kids won't even want to step outside of the air-conditioning. Even black folks with our turf skin get sun burns here.

Thanks, that actually scared me. I am no longer upset that my ticket was not issued due to issue with my card, i've had to cancel the booking to sort things with my bank. Now i am thinking of somewhere else. Will you recommend any please? Save enough and loads of fun for kids. Thanks a mill.
Re: Holiday In Tx Us by Bossman(m): 3:12pm On May 27, 2010
Disney/Orlando will certainly be one of the best places to take the kids to, but it will be quite expensive around that time as well. The weather will be no different from Lagos weather, if not worse. Every city in the US has its attractions. So, without having any particular city in mind, Orlando is the most appropriate place to take them to. See if you can book a package that includes tickets to the theme parks. If not, you can always do it separately. Your hotel will usually be on the park grounds and there will be free shuttle to and from the park. Disney is kids/families paradise.

Even here in Chicago, we have tons of stuff for kids to do, but my preference for someone coming to the US on vacation with kids that age will be Orlando. However, if you do want to try Chicago, you can google for the info about kids activities or you can PM me for more in.

It must be US simply because my kids wants to visit US, I think because their school mates tells them so many things about it. They've bn to Paris b4.

Ok, I see peer pressure. then Orland is your place.

Otherwise go for 'all inclusive' family holiday in the carribean.
Re: Holiday In Tx Us by Bossman(m): 8:30pm On May 27, 2010
An all-inclusive in the Caribbean would definitely be nice. Not sure how difficult it would be to get a visa though. I was just at the Grand Palladium (see link below) with my family during the kids spring-break last month. If visa is not an issue, then I'd suggest spending some time in Orlando, then head to the Caribbean for about a week or so.

hen hen, you mean you came to Jamaica without saying hello to me? angry  grin

@Topic

I will recommend Jamaica for holiday anytime & getting Jamaica visa is not difficult at all

Nigerians get the visa within one week with ease and since the OP has US visa, they do not need transit visa.

So I support the Idea of spending some time in Orlando then visit Caribbean for another one or two weeks
Re: Holiday In Tx Us by Nobody: 10:38pm On May 27, 2010
why not try new york or washington dc? The fare should even be cheaper, i think.

since you say you dont particularly know anyone in houston, you might as well go anywhere in the US.  The safe parts of mexico are also a destination of choice these days.

Hopefully, some day i'll go on a kenyan safari. That's always been a dream of mine.

Like someone already mentioned, every city in the states has it's own attraction. I'll recommend Las Vegas in the winter, the weather won't be as hot and you'd get killer deals at that time of year. Also your kids would have so much to do and see in Vegas.

Just make sure you stay out of the casinos when the kids are in bed grin

Re: Holiday In Tx Us by Bossman(m): 5:37pm On May 28, 2010
Any of the US "Big Cities" have their attractions. It depends on when you plan on visiting the US as well. In the winter, Florida and anywhere in the south (where the weather will be warm) are usually where folks head. Heck! Even folks living in very cold places like here in Chicago, head down to Florida/The Caribbean on vacation in the winter. Here in Chicago, there are lots of activities during the summer, both for kids and adults. I guess it really depends on what you like to do. If you just want to relax and shop, then pretty much any of the Big US cities will offer that. In Chicago for example, we have pretty much all the major shops downtown, several HUGE malls in the suburbs, including the 2nd largest in-door mall, etc. Heck! We also have a lot of Naija activities and parties, since there is a large Naija population here.
