Lagos State Government has disclosed plans to install free-wifi in
public schools and bus terminals, basically to aide accessibility to
information in the state. Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Hakeem Fahm, who disclosed the plan at ongoing ministerial press briefing held in Ikeja, yesterday, added that the provision would serve as another avenue for residents to enhance social activities.

He said: “We have provided free-wifi in three parks, Ndubuisi Kanu
and Johnson, Jakande Tinubu Parks in Ikeja and Muri-Okunola part
in Victoria Island. Aside this, we will be providing free-wifi in public
schools. “Also, we will be providing additional free-wifi acdcess at
bus terminals and several parks and garden in the state.

“The projects represent a quick win for the state government towards the vision of making Lagos a smart city,” the commissioner added.

According to him, Smart City, a comprehensive programme that
seeks to provide a 24-hour driven economy which would allow
companies to operate in a safe and secure environment thereby
creating more jobs and increase Gross Domestic Product, GDP of
the state.

However, Fahm hinted that no fewer than four million residents
had been captured under ongoing Lagos State Resident
Registration Agency, LASRRA.

The commissioner explained that information “gathered from the
registration is use to embark on planning and allocation of
resources in the state.”

On effort to increase number captured, he stated that efforts had
been strengthened to ensure more residents are registered. The
commissioner assured that plans to deploy additional 10,000 High
Definition (HD) CCTV cameras across the State, to boost security,
transportation and infrastructure in the state.

“The security component will deploy thousands of surveillance
CCTV cameras through the length and breadth of the State. The
transportation component focuses on Intelligent Transport Service
(ITS) and the connectivity component with provision of a metro
fibre network through a major Internet Service Provider (IPS) that
will eventually lead connectivity to various homes, offices and
institutions in the State,” Fahm said.

After installing Wi-Fi are they going to provide them with the tablets and pads to use it with. Or Are they encouraging students and pupils to be using electronic gadgets and high end phones in school. To me this will further act as a distraction to their studies rather than aiding it. Not all students can afford a smart Wi-Fi enabled device and will create bitterness for those who does not have. We all know that nobody can control them when it comes to its usage, hence it will be abused. The government should rather empower the teachers on how best to utilize the internet to aid their teaching ideas by providing them with, digital audio visual equipments, electronic libraries and smart board that is internet enabled. The Wi-Fi should be passworded and known only to the teachers and staff members. This is my take.

Am surprise you are taking a myopic view on this.

The best and enduring education is not the one impacted on you by your teachers, but the one sought by yourself, driven by an inner desire and hunger.

The internet is a vast avenue capable of feeding that hunger and drive, it will enable students to strive beyond the four walls of their classrooms or the limitations of their teacher’s repetitive and tired lesson notes. They will have opportunities and reseviour of knowledge only limited by their drives and desires. At early age, they will be able to see what their peers globally are doing and capable of, making them more apt to compete in the emerging global market place.

Smartphones are ubiquitous these days even in Nigeria, the price point of these devices keep coming down and they are no longer the exclusive reserve of the rich.

Agreed, social misfits will take advantage of it to further their nefarious activities, but that is not enough to deter it. We don’t stop building highways and bridges because Armed Robbers use them to commit their nefarious activities and as such, these concerns should not deter building the information high way or making it more accessible to more Nigerians.

Knowledge is power and advantage.

Lol

There's a catch. The one in the BRT asked for TOO MANY permissions. Oh, and they made us install an app before we could connect. An app that asked for call history, storage information, location, etc.

Then it made a request to monitor all traffic going in and out of my phone, through mobile network and WiFi. My phone brought up a popup I'd NEVER seen before telling me only to accept this if its an app I trust.

Do I trust the Nigerian Government? Not at all. I uninstalled their rubbish app immediately. Let them keep their WiFi. I'll use my data in peace lol.

This is a welcome development and once necessary machinery is put in place to maintain it, its going to be of great benefit to lagosians. As expected, some enemies of the Nation are already condemning it.

Are you in nigeria? I don't think internate-enabled wi-fi phones are unaffordable to most students - many are already using such phones anyway .
