Makeup has become a necessity for most women and they believe that they cannot step out of the house without at least five different kinds of cosmetic products. The cosmetics market has bloomed to such an extent that not only are there different cosmetics for every kind of body part, there are different ones for different seasons too! But before makeup is marketed to us, it is tested on animals. Do you ever wonder why is it so? Because the cosmetics we trust to make us beautiful are actually full of so many harmful chemicals. And despite the fact that these cosmetics make us look good temporarily, in the end they are going to leave an ugly effect. Here are some of the most common side effects of the cosmetics that you apply without a second thought:

1. An Unwanted Dependency Leading to Addiction
In an era where social media is all about creating the perfect image of ourselves, the idea that one can look perfect without makeup has become laughable. Some people have an extreme dependency on cosmetics and avoid social interaction if they are not fully made up. This dependency can lead to psychological problems like lowering of the self-esteem of a person. Makeup helps create a perfect image and while everyone looks flawless, there is societal pressure to live up to these expectations. Therefore, this dependency becomes an addiction that leads to the erosion of self-esteem and self-confidence.

2.Prolonged Exposure Leads to Headaches:

Headaches are a common issue associated with cosmetics. Usually prolonged exposure to extensive makeup leads to dizziness, tiredness and nausea. It is therefore, very important that while removing makeup, you remove every trace of it. The fact that cosmetics contain only chemicals, and some have certain ingredients that, if exposed to directly, could lead to bouts of unconsciousness. It is probably more harmful for people who suffer migraines and chronic headaches.

3. Permanent Dark Circles

The skin around the eyes is more sensitive as compared to the rest of your face and it shows the effect of chemicals sooner too. Experts tend to suggest that fewer cosmetics should be applied around the eyes as it can lead to bags under the eyes and dark circles. Dark circles are not easy to get rid of and often create constant marks under the eyes. This creates an endless cycle because to hide their dark circles, people apply more makeup which in turn leads to the worsening of the condition.

4. Eye Makeup Causes A Number of Diseases
It can cause the development of chemical, toxic and infective conjunctivitis, glaucoma, uveitis, dry eye and the discoloration of the eyes. If you wear lenses the chemicals in the makeup can damage your lenses and result in thinning of eyelashes. Mascara, which can lead to thinning of eyelashes can also cause blindness as it contains pseudomonas aeruginosa, a very harmful bacteria that is resistant to both heat and cold.

5. Clogging of Pores and Acne

Cosmetics like foundation and primer that even out the complexion of your skin and make your skin smooth, do this by smoothening your pores and natural blemishes. This means that your skin is not allowed to breathe and therefore can end up causing several problems. Foundations and powders that clog your pores can aggravate acne. It can also flare up your blemishes, it can cause pimple and cause acne breakout. So, avoid using oil-based cosmetics and go for non-acnegenic makeup that won’t block your pores.

6. Removal of Hair Damages Your Skin
The removal of unwanted hair from your body can lead to several unwanted damages that you are unaware of. Waxing and shaving can cause ingrown hairs, red bumps and several times, bleeding too. The waxing of facial hair leads your skin to sag earlier than normal as it means frequent harsh pulling of your skin. Waxing strips, when pulled away can cause infections if the skin has been bruised in the process. Removal of hair also disturbs hair follicles, causing them to grow in different directions, leaving ugly black bumps all over your skin.

7. Damages Your Nails

Nail paints are a staple for fashion and growing out your nails will probably never go out of fashion. Manicures and pedicures may sound very hygienic but if done very frequently can be damaging to nails. The quality of your nails will decrease over time due to extensive application of cosmetics and will lead to your nails becoming fragile. The nails become thin and as they lose their natural color they start to look pale. Dark nail paints could stain your nails and turn them yellow. Acetone, which is present in nail paints and removers is a harsh chemical and tends to damage nail strength.

8. Dries Out Skin Or Makes It More Oily
Some foundations and powders tend to dry out your skin and make it look flaky, dull and ashen. Such cosmetics can also cause cracks and fine wrinkles in your skin, which could cause infections to develop. Oil based makeup can cause your makeup to clump and crease, especially around your eyelids. Such cosmetics will leave an oily deposit that will result in a thick oily sheen. To counter dry skin or oily skin for that matter, you should do proper cleansing and moisturizing instead of depending on oil based cosmetics.

9. Ageing of Your Skin
The chemicals used in makeup contribute to the ageing of your skin because they dry out the natural oils and essential vitamins and minerals present in human skin. This causes your skin to lose its natural moisture and texture, and it starts to develop wrinkles and dry patches. Prolonged usage of makeup will make your skin look older than it actually is. And since it is almost impossible to get the youthful glow back, cosmetics marketers are launching products that help counter the effect of aging that has been cause by them.

10. Excessive Hair Problems

Even if people don’t use makeup, hair products are extensively used because hair is that aspect of your appearance which completes your look. Shampoos, conditioners, gels and serums may make your hair look perfect for the day, but in the long run they are doing nothing but damage to your hair. Such cosmetics effect the hair quantity and quality, causing hair fall, excessive dandruff, thinning of hair or redness of scalp. Hairsprays are even more dangerous as they can result in scalp damage and permanent discoloration of hair. Hair colors and hair dyes are next to toxic as allergic reactions can cause burning, redness, itchy scalp, breathing difficulties and facial swelling. The chemicals in hair dyes are toxic and can cause diseases like cancer, reproductive failure, and damage to lungs and so on.

11. Lipstick Can Cause Lead Poisoning

Lipstick dries the moisture out of your lips and some of them contain oils and chemicals that can damage you lips. Lipstick is made out of some very harmful content including lead and mineral oil. Lead ingestion can lead to possible brain damage and behavior abnormalities. Although, on an average, the lead content in a lipstick is safe, considering the fact that most users apply lipstick for over ten times a day, there are certain long term side effects that are a result of it. Lead ingestion could lead to poor muscle coordination, increased blood pressure, hearing and vision impairment and other alarming neural damages. The mineral oil forms a nonporous sheen on your lips and can block skin cell development and proper functioning.

12. Skin Allergies
Cosmetics such as deodorants and antiperspirants contain alcohol and can cause redness and irritation, and itching which may eventually lead to pigmentation of skin. They also block your sweat glands and can lead to conditions like contact dermatitis and allergies. An allergic reaction to fairness creams or sunscreens can lead to permanent discoloration of the skin or even severe damages. From rashes to inflammation, the wrong kind of cosmetic that is not compatible with your skin type can have a deep rooted impact on your skin.

13. Damage To Reproductive Organs
Certain cosmetics such as bubble baths, or oils can affect your reproductive organs and even lead to infertility. Talcum powder, if inhaled can travel to your reproductive system and can affect the menstrual cycles leading to other imbalances. Chemicals such a phthalates and parabens, used widely in cosmetics can disrupt reproductive hormones and hold potential risks to reproductive and thyroid systems. Cosmetics such as shower gels can lead to vaginal infections or even prostrate and ovarian cancer if brought in direct contact to your organs and if they are of a bad quality.

14. Can Lead to Lung Diseases
The chemicals that are used in cosmetics are often breathed in, especially from fragrances or powders and they could lead to damaging of the lung tissues. Heavy makeup often triggers conditions of the lungs if inhaled. The chemical ingredients in talcum powder, such as silicates talc causes allergies and infections of the lungs. Powder based cosmetics are breathed in and can settled inside our lung tissues, they can also travel through our reproductive systems, causing undoable damages.

15. Cosmetics Can Cause Cancer

The most threatening side effects of excessive use of cosmetics is skin cancer. Lipstick contains aluminum which may cause long term anemia and even glucose intolerance. Many products contain chemicals like zinc oxide and barium sulphate which are toxic and can result in organ failure, especially that of the kidney and liver. Cosmetics like body moisturizers can disturb the thyroid content of the body. Parabens, a preservative used heavily in cosmetics has been linked in researches to causes of cancer.

Therefore, if you are an avid user of makeup, make sure that it has the least amount of chemicals, and that you do not make a habit of applying makeup all the time.
