Wrong and misleading. The poster was translating in a simple manner, thus losing the literary meaning of the words. For example 1. Uchenna does not mean God's idea. The full name is Uchenna ga eme. Meaning Let the will of God be done. Uchenna means Godswill not God's idea. 2. Ekene does not mean Praise. Ekene is a short form of Ekene dili Chukwu meaning To God be the Glory.
And so many others

MayhorE: Igbo names and their meanings have always been a question for the non- Igbos. Most Yoruba names are easily translated because of its structure. They are usually combinations of the most commonly spoken Yoruba words, most times prayers. Igbo names know no boundaries as there are Igbo names and meanings for baby boys , Igbo names for girls , Igbo names for twins, and funky Igbo names. Twins in Igbo culture are called ejima. Just as other cultures have numerous names for God, there are also many Igbo names for God. The Igbo tribe hails from the southeastern part of the beautiful nation, Nigeria. An ethnic group is known for being its brother’s keeper, the Igbos are known for their marketing skills, trade, business, and construction. The Igbo man and woman can make a business out of anything. Their ethnic name defines their culture and the personal name describes each individual’s unique being. A name is a means of identification. Names tell who you are, where you’re from, the family or clan and sometimes your purpose. Most Nigerian names are prayers. The average Nigerian believes in speaking things into existence, hence the prayers being names. Just like other cultures, most Igbos believe what you call a child can determine their future. The Igbo man loves to appraise God in the naming of a child. These names have undertones with strong meanings. A name also tells your position in your family, the circumstances under which a child was born and even the type of birth, multiple maybe. 1. Ndi igbo subanu igbo, asusu igbo ama adanata Thanks I got that Ogugua part, sympathise and console are same thing, then Obianuju; born in abundance or plenty, it can be in Obianujuaku (born in abundance of wealth) or Obianujunwa (abundance of children) Another notable name is Ehiuche; don't know how to explain this it's more like an unexpected child, normally given to a child born when the couple no longer expect to have a child. I love threads like this. It's very educative. I have igbo friends who are very nice to me. I've been able to pick a few words from here. I don't know whether it's safe to conclude that *'Ike' means Power, going by Chike and Ikenna. * Probably, Ikechukwu will mean God's power ? *I also think 'Nna' means Father, going by Nnenna and Ikenna, then Nnayi, a word commonly used in the movies. *Also, Nnenna could be an Igbo version of either of Yetunde, Yewande, Yeside or Yejide.... all guesses. Then some Igbo names are missing : Chikodiri, Chinasa, Ifeanyi, Chinemere, Kosisochukwu, Chineze, Obiozor, Onyekachi, Nduka, Chimamanda, Okechukwu, Chekwube, Obiangeli, Obianuju, Isioma and the rest. Thank you! |
