Car Talk - Changing Of Oil Type ! by mopson2002: 4:25pm On May 25, 2018
I bought a Nigerian Used Nissan Maxima, 2004 (Dagreen). The car is working perfectly well but I discovered that the former owner had not been using. Good the right oil for it - W5 W30 but Instead he's been using the regular Mobil oil of 4000 (Xhp I think).

I want to switch to the right oil, please can someone advice me rightly

Thank you.

Everyone or almost everyone knows about bobistheoilguy.

Not everyone knows that Nissan has one of the best forums dedicated to oils for a specific vehicle contributed to by some of the best minds in the automotive industry as well as some of the most enlightened car owners as opposed to pedestrian contributions.

The kind of people our ibadan automotive high chief likes to associate with.

Extensive used oil analysis was done there for nissan engines by both users and oil laboratory specialists.

It is a resource second to none for your brand.

Look for that thread/forum and read it

Or pay someone to read it for you and summarize his or her findings for you.

You can also check up my posts on engine oil and form your conclusions

Read more about your engine in the link provided.

If I were you, I would follow the oil change intervals in the vehicles by Toyota powered with the same engine.

If I intended to extend it, then I would use a performance oil filter from Mobil1 or Bosch. If I could not lay my hands on either (which you should be able to courtesy of radautoworks cheaply), then I would change the ordinary oil filter either twice or thrice during the period of my own chosen oil change interval.

That would be guesswork though, the best way to determine most appropriate oil change interval is a laboratory test.

That said, let me share with you some more facts about your engine so you will be guided accordingly.

This part should concern you the most:

Increased oil consumption for NZ - a purely age-related phenomenon. As for classic Toyota engines, it appears after ~150.000 km and is moderate (200-300 ml / 1000 km), increase during long rides with high rpm. Overhaul with replacement of piston rings and valve seals makes sense in case of indecent oil burning (500 ml).

Compare the oil consumption with the above viz a viz the oil change interval by equivalent Toyota's and your own oil change interval before concluding that it is out of specification and something to worry about

I re-read your post, and your reason for switching was longer oil change interval (OCI).

One rule of longer oil change intervals is to frequently check engine oil level and top up if necessary.

All those who do long OCI practice this rule religiously. Oil will burned up while in use, it is a fact of science, it is inescapable, it is just that the degree varies from engine to engine hence I asked you is the burning within factory specification, then no need to worry, but if it is out of factory specifications, then you need to worry, which boils down to doing the maths and coming to a rational decision based on the cold facts and not emotions which can go anywhere haywire.
