We should prepare for some interesting times in our Hospitals though cool I pity the patients though.

Imagine when Nurses and Pharmacists decided to frustrate the effort of the doctors in the hospitals. cool

NMA should not have interfered in that fight at all.

Frustrate how?
That the pharmacist won't dispense drugs prescribed by the doctor or would dispense a different set of drugs?
Or that the nurse would refuse to serve patients in the wards their drugs, change beddings or take vital signs?
That's dereliction of duty, that in a hospital setting could lead to loss of life and I bet any JOHESU member that does that won't even have sympathy from even his/her family member.
It's one thing to go on strike and an entirely different ball game when you are officially at work and refuse to carry out your medical duties or deliberately dispense what you have no authority to dispense on your own, either or both that can lead to death of a patient or worsen someone's health status. No one would visit such an individual when jail comes calling!
People should not type of things, actions or inactions, the consequences of which they are ignorant of.
What you just typed is pure folly and don't spread such mindset or you or people with same mindset as yours find yourself in very serious trouble, capable of even ruining your life for ever!!

Medicine and Surgery didn't start in Nigeria, let alone at Yaba Tech.

You have been brainwashed by the AMLSN for long.

The Yaba Medical school was a PRE-CLINICAL school and those who graduated from it had to travel to UK to to complete their training in the teaching hospitals with Medical College, University of London or Dublin.

Sometimes because of paucity of funds ,some of these graduates worked in hospitals in Nigeria as Assistant medical officers (NOT DOCTORS) for 1-2years under the supportive supervision of British medical doctors and saved enough money to travel to UK to complete their medical degrees and become Medical officers (MO)

And medicine and surgery / dentistry started at Yaba tech as what please if I may ask? Does that make them upgraded technicians too?

Good historical point.

In one novel , a minor character starts out as a Assistant MO, and then becomes a MO after studies abroad. (Forgotten the novel title, but it was set in the South East in the 1930's ).

CMD means chief medical director. Do you want somebody who didn't study medicine to be your 'medicine' director, not to talk of chief medical director? If so, how about a carpenter becoming a chief engineer, just because he too works in a construction unit?
Nurses, medical lab techs, pharmacists could rise to the top of their chosen profession without asking to be made chief medical directors. We have chief nurse, chief pharmacist, etc?
So, you see, we're in a shithole, because of crazy demands and expectations of citizens like you.

Unfortunately, the doctors pay is all you see. You don't see the longer years of training, 24-hr calls,, and other expanded responsibilities in the hospital. So sad. You're like the cat who wants the fish, but doesn't want to get wet. And that's how you intend to lead the healthcare professions?

AMLSN actually used to be AMLTN-association of med lab technologist of Nigeria. We started the agitation to become 'scientists' around 1984, because it sounded better to be called a scientist than a mere technologist!

I was there, and in person, and I do challenge any of these confused and further misled young graduates to dare challenge me on that issue.

Mr. Park, the semi albino vs mullato used to be the registrar of the institute then, our graduating exam was part II IMLT exam, but by the time the certificate came out we had agitated enough for them to change it to IMLS!

Despite the activism, petitions, and protests mounted to prove that we were infact equal to the doctors, the medical lab techs of Nigeria have not updated or even improved their academic syllabus, even up till today.

I have friends teaching in Ibadan, Enugu and Vom Jos.

U forgot to add that senate president;Saraki;is also a doctor...Typical of JOHESU members.Always using sentiments to justify their sheer greed.
It is a well known fact in Nigeria that Ministerial appointments are strictly political;so it is coincidental that they happened to be doctors in that position; based on purely their political affiliations and not their careers..
And yes CMD positions are for Drs;as applicable every elsewhere in the world. If not so;give me just one example of a govt owned hospital in the world where this is contrary..

Everyone knew the pay disparity before choosing their career paths.
That house officer you talked about have you tried checking his work schedule?? In some centres these guys are on calls every alternate days and you think that's normal??
I definitely want government to increase the salary of others but using the doctor's salary as a yardstick was out of it.
For the headship of hospital try and check websites of most teaching hospitals around the world and see who is the head.
Other health workers are indispensable but not equals to doctors. Even among doctors all are not equal but all are mutually dependent

The foundation of JOHESU is faulty at it's core. Every member has this mindset that "WE ARE UNITED AGAINST DOCTORS". Doctors are supposed to be seen as their benefactors, but they see them as oppressors. The association gives their members FALSE HOPES that they can achieve the status of a doctor through confrontation with doctors instead of through academic means (Studying Medicine). They have also brainwashed their members to think that you are nobody in the health sector if you are not a doctor (This is FALSE) . If you distinguish yourself as a nurse or pharmacists, you'll get the respect you deserve, even more than some doctors. I have many examples of highly respected nurses and pharmacists in the country that you'll never see in the gathering of JOHESU. These are nurses and pharmacists who have made names for themselves and even professors of medicine accord them their respect.

Lastly I'll like to advise the nurses and pharmacists. You are being used by these other guys. Medicine and dentistry, pharmacy and nursing are the 3 core clinical speciality. These other guys are upgraded technicians (they used to be diploma courses). They are using you guys to achieve their aims while you get little or nothing.

Also, for the gatemen, office clerks, record keepers who still think and hope that one day one day JOHESU will take them to the level of a medical doctor through strike actions and confrontations and insulting doctors on facebook; I say a big congratulations in advance to you.

Well said!

The Joint Health Sector Union on Thursday called off its 43-day-old strike, directing its members to resume work on Friday.

The body also lambasted the Federal Government for failing to meet its demands.

The directive was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the National Executive Council meeting of JOHESU and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations in Abuja.

The communiqué read in part, “The various gains from the meetings with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, were presented to the NEC of JOHESU.

“After exhaustive deliberations and discussions, the NEC in session approved that the six-week old strike be suspended this day Thursday, May 31, 2018 because of the sympathy the unions have for the suffering Nigerian masses and also to pave way for further negotiations to continue on Monday, June 4, 2018.”

The union maintained that the strike was not political but was based on the principle of fairness and justice.

It, however, had harsh words for the Federal Government for failing to honour its promise of increasing the salaries of health workers.
