Over the years, there have been stories of shining football stars who later ended up in penury and died unsung. Some of them had this experience either due to wrong or no investment.
For instance, Rashidi Yekini was a skillful footballer who enjoyed the fame, glamour and glory attached to the profession but in his later years he seemed to have lived in a penury, a sharp contrast to his status as an accomplished football legend.
On the flip side, Brazilian football hero, Edson Arantes do Nascimento also known as Pele who hung his boot over 40 years ago is still basking in the euphoria of the greatness and glamour that come with being a football super star.
He is about owning a museum, in Santos Brazil and has a blend of Brazilian coffee named Café Pele. He also earns a fortune from endorsement deals.
In Nigeria, generations of former and current Super Eagles are like the great Pele. They have learnt to wisely invest in lucrative businesses. According to Principal Enterprise Officer of Small and Medium Enterprises Development of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Sola Dawodu (SME Catalyst), “it is good that most of the footballers are thinking in the right direction by investing in existing businesses and start ups.
“The footballers have realised that there would be life after football. They cannot play football till old age and they need to prepare for retirement so that they will not suffer. And the only way to avoid any regret in the future is to start up a new business or rather invest in viable businesses. There are lots of businesses where they can make good returns and a lot of them have already taken the initiatives. It is not good to live in affluence and later die in penury. With good management, they will grow their businesses and live comfortably even after retiring from playing football”.
