Fayemi’s supporter murdered

By Mathew Akinwunmi

Armed gangs have murdered a supporter of All Progressives Congress, (APC) gubernatorial aspirant, Mr Kayode Fayemi. He was gunned down in what eyewitnesses described as a clear case of premeditated murder. He was shot at close range by two men reported to have warned him to change his campaign slogan from supporting the APC candidate. Irohinoodua visited the scene of the attack this morning.

The victim, Ayo Ojo known widely as “Omo Ijoba” is a habitual lone campaigner who goes from door-to-door promoting the APC candidate. The APC is reputed for a retinue of volunteers in almost every village and city where the party’s radical supporters on their own without party prompting, wake up each morning, drumming support for the party and denouncing the atrocities of the ruling PDP. This was put into effective use during the campaigns for Dr Kayode Fayemi in his bid to retrieve his mandate between 2007 and 2009.

Ayo was murdered at Ado-Ekiti early morning hours today, in the full glare of helpless onlookers who were threatened by the gun men. The incidence took place few meters away from Captain Cook, a popular eatery. His assailants were said to have laid siege for him as he moved from one house to the other deriding the ruling government of Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) as inhuman and wicked.

A source said he was shouting with a loud speaker, ‘come out on July 14, reject the PDP and their rogues, reject drug barons, reject 419, reject thieves and vagabonds, reject murderers’ when who

Sympathisers rushed him to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital where he later died.

The APC Ado-Ekiti local chapter said it had declared one day of mourning in honour of a man locals describe a “a liberator in motion.”

An APC local leader Deji Alagbaka said Ayo was a “one man riot squad. He was a pin in the ass of Governor Ayodele Fayose. He would move from one house to the other campaigning against government policies. We knew he was marked because of threats he had received from the past.” He said it was now obvious that the ruling party sees the poor people as its enemy, describing Ayo as a 'poor, humble and diligent fellow who stood for justice and liberty."

He said his death has added to the ‘long list of victims of democracy’ adding that the family has received assurances of support from the APC leadership that Ayo’s death will not be in vain.
