A new movie entitled Anchor Baby depicts the struggles of most "Anchor Babies" and their parents in the US. The movie is about an expectant couple, Joyce and Paul Unanga who are living in the United States illegally. Their dream is to have their baby in the US. This single act will guarantee automatic citizenship for their baby. The choices and struggles they go through to achieve this dream are showcased in this emotion filled drama. The film is currently in post-production in Toronto, Canada. Anchor Baby is slated for release by December 2010.

(eyedears Innovative co.) May 24 2010 – Alpha Galore Films, a division of Alpha Galore Inc., has just completed the shooting of their first feature length movie – Anchor Baby, written and directed by Nigerian-born Lonzo Nzekwe and produced by Lonzo Nzekwe and Ian Sun. The movie stars Omoni Oboli (Nollywood), Sam Sarpong (Hollywood actor and former Tommy Hilfiger model) and Terry Oliver (Canadian Singer/Songwriter). The leads are supported by other excellent cast members such as Mark Cassius, Michael Scratch, Colin Paradine, Santiago Lopera and Cyrus Faird; just to name a few.

Synopsis: The storyline is about Paul (Sarpong) and Joyce (Oboli), a married couple from Nigeria who are living in the United States as illegal immigrants. Joyce is five months pregnant. When they received their voluntary deportation order from the Immigration department, they decided to go into hiding. Paul is later deported, while Joyce struggles to fulfill their dream alone. She meets Susan (Oliver), a married but childless freelance writer who offers to help her until her baby is born. Joyce, happily accepts the offer. But, will she accomplish her dream before her time is up?
Anchor Baby, aims to showcase the sad story of desperation, lies, struggles and broken dreams, faced by U.S. non-citizens in order to belong to the American society. The movie was shot in Canada and is currently in post-shoot stage. It will be ready for release by December 2010.

Heard about this movie on Rhythm 93.7 Port Harcourt, today.
From what I heard, it sounded very interesting. Omoni Oboli is taking Naija to another level, starring alongside Sam Sarpong from Hollywood. They were actually the only two black people in the movie. Na wa oooo!

and on another note, it's bye bye anchor babies:

Arizona's Next Immigration Target: Children of Illegals

"Anchor babies" isn't a very endearing term, but in Arizona those are the words being used to tag children born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants. While not new, the term is increasingly part of the local vernacular because the primary authors of the nation's toughest and most controversial immigration law are targeting these tots - the legal weights that anchor many undocumented aliens in the U.S. - for their next move.

Buoyed by recent public opinion polls suggesting they're on the right track with illegal immigration, Arizona Republicans will likely introduce legislation this fall that would deny birth certificates to children born in Arizona - and thus American citizens according to the U.S. Constitution - to parents who are not legal U.S. citizens

This movie is very current cause it's addressing this sort of social issue in Arizona and other parts of the world. It's an issue which affects most foreigners, including Nigerians who go overseas to have their babies. It's a very serious subject and one of the reasons why people should try and see this movie when it comes out.
