One time like that when the sky was dark and bereft of any star, two little boys, with two years' difference in age, stood on the edge of their parents' bed. A kerosene lantern sat on a stool at the end of the room, which was located in Fortune City, Nigeria. They watched their little sister, Tolani, groan as she spun from one side of the bed to another. Their mother said she was having a fever.
The older of the boys was Femi, the one whose hair had already started giving the bald shape. Their mother, though not that rich, made sure his head was always shining to his chagrin. The other one, Lolu, was chubby and could spend the whole of the day eating. Some of their neighbours called him chicken because he was never filled with food.
They glanced at their mother, who kept moving from place to place, picking one thing or the other. Despite being tender of age, they knew their mother was doing something different that night.
On a normal night like that, they would have been thrown into their pyjamas and probably forced to close their eyes till sleep came because the next day was school. However, that night, they were putting on different clothes- the ones they wear to church on Sundays and wear to parties on Saturdays.
She mumbled under her breathe and slammed the wardrobe. She zipped the big bag she used whenever they were travelling. When she was ready, she sat on the bed, woke their sister and tapped their cheeks.
' Babies, we're leaving your daddy and his family house. He doesn't want me to work. For crying out loud, the money is three hundred thousand naira as against the fifty thousand he gets from his wanton job'.
She ushered them out, after crying for some minutes, and they left the house. For many years, she believed they didn't remember that they were just kids. But they did.
Tolani grew up to see all men as scum and she grew up to love her career above all things. Femi grew up always giving women the chance to do what they desired. A few people praised him for being a real man. But many others called him Sissy.
Lolu grew up to hate his mother and most ambitious women. He believed their love for money above family was the cause for him living without a father-figure in his life.

Yet, their mother still felt sad despite the comfort she gave them. Should she have lived with a man that refused to allow her work because of his insecurities? Or should she have endured and see her family bloom into one with love and probably grow hungry for the comfort they never enjoyed?
And the only answer she had for herself was: nothing can satisfy, nothing on earth.
