VIN stickers for side by side comparison of Vehicles 1 and 2:

Addendum:

1. Vehicle 1 appears to have been exported and was cannibalized for parts.

2. Vehicle 2 appears to be a 2017 Honda CR-V of Canadian origin. Note bilingual labels in French/English, Odometer is also displayed in KM, though for this model there is an option/button to switch to Miles.

3. Vehicle 2 cannot possibly bear the same VIN as Vehicle 1. Vehicle 2 has a relatively high quality counterfeit VIN sticker, which includes the VIN and the barcode from vehicle 1.
Note fonts, spacing, 4WD vs FWD, Colour codes, among others.

4. Vehicle 2 is a quite expensive, late model vehicle of uncertain origin and provenance, most certainly illegally obtained. VIN cloning par excellence.

5. Nigeria, specifically Lagos State, urgently needs updated and modern automobile safety and security laws/rules/regulations.

I assume you're referring to his refusal to provide the VIN for his advertised vehicles because of some fear of VIN cloning.

In which case you're quite wrong, and this is very different.

For the events described here to have been possible the perpetrators would have needed physical access to the actual physical VIN stamp from the damaged Vehicle.

Simply seeing the VIN online wouldn't suffice for the level of detail that went into this counterfeit.

An inquisitive mind is a brilliant mind.

This is the exact post I assume you referred to:

calculus×:

* Someone saw my advert, requested for the Vin to to be displayed which I did, this person came to my office with his boss to inspect the Vehicle, made copies of Custom Paper claiming to want to verify if duty was paid and that was all I heard from them.

Few Months after someone else bought the Vehicle and was unable to register it. The Customer could have come here and called me names for selling a Registered Vehicle as Toks. He had a listening ear and we both investigated the Case. It turned out that the guy that inspected the Vehicle with his boss actually took a loan from his office to procure the Car and Registered it without my consent. Luckily, he did the Registration with his Phone number and that was how we were able to track him down. Ever since then, I stopped displaying Vin nos on majority of my adverts

Kudos to you for this Change you brought to Auto Section. You deserve a recommendation

As I stated, these are very different scenarios:

He stated that the gentleman requested the VIN and it was provided, and subsequently he came to his place of business, made copies of the vehicle custom papers, and absconded, proceeding to register the vehicle illegally with the particulars and the VIN.

1. Referring to the events I described in the first 2 posts on this page, because of the level of detail in the counterfeit sticker of the White CR-V, it could only have been possible if the forger had physical possession of the original sticker from the black vehicle, and even with that, they were unable to match the font and a few other subtle features.

The difference between these two scenarios is that this goes far beyond merely seeing the VIN online and copying and pasting on a vehicle, the VIN alone would not nearly be enough for this level of work. The 1D bar was duplicated.

Even a photo of the VIN sticker may not be enough, unless the picture of the stamp was taken directly, not at an angle, and with a particularly high resolution camera with OIS to ensure the binary comes out perfect. What seller here bothers with that?

3. To the second issue you raised, as a matter of fact a naive but honest seller would be able to determine that there was something very amiss with the white CR-V, with a history report. Perhaps not to the level of detail I outlined above, but certainly enough to make them ask the right questions.

That was where the forger in this case erred. Unlike in the case of the red Toyota Venza, the cloned VIN here has an actual timeline which I outlined above.

Any vehicle seller, experienced or otherwise, has no business selling vehicles if he doesn't understand the simple concept of vehicle history.

Do not advertise or sell what you don't know.

As for your last paragraph. There is a little beginning in every business. No one was born with all this we all learn

This is very case is far part away from what have spotted. This would have been much compared in the case of the corolla calculus posted. But for this which you posted I can't remember.

The big question is where did all this take place ? In the US or on the Nigerian soil which definitely can't be . Calculux was right stating this fraudulent act has been going on in the US for quite sometime

There's no debate about who spotted anything first or last, you seem to be missing the point.

I have merely referred to the cases you mentioned and how they have few similarities with this one.

I'm not sure where the repeated 'Island of knowledge' chant comes from, but sure, if it works for you, by all means.

Regarding the geographical location,

The white CR-V was probably exported from Canada.

The black CR-V appears to have been exported from the US

I would most certainly hazard a probably accurate guess that this happened in Lagos, Nigeria.

Gazzuzz already hinted at that in his first post:

GAZZUZZ:

The only definite unknown is the provenance of the White CR-V.
