Causes of Pimples
1. Dead Skin Build-Up
The skin sheds a layer of dead skin every now and then. A few of the dead skin gets stuck in the sebum and blocks the pores. This blocked pores become pimples.

2. Puberty
Increased levels of testosterone in men and women can trigger an increased production of sebum. This is common during puberty. When the body undergoes physical changes and gets ready for reproduction, the sebaceous glands become overactive. The sebum build-up also blocks pores and causes pimples.

3. Bacteria
When a skin pore becomes blocked by a combination of sebum and dead skin cells, it creates an opportunity for bacteria which lives on the skin called Propionibacterium acnes to enter and create a pimple.

4. Genetics
Some families are genetically disposed to having pimples. If you have a genetic problem, the pimples on the face will reoccur at various times through your lifetime.

5. Medications
Some medications may cause pimples as part of it’s side effect.

6. Hormones
Don’t think adults don’t get pimples because they are past the puberty stage. Adult pimples can be caused by a hormonal imbalance in the body. It is a very common symptom of PMS (PreMenstrual Syndrome) and also occurs during the menopause period.

7. Oily Food
This is the commonest reason for pimple formation in today’s generation. Eating a lot of fried and processed food triggers your oil glands and produces sebum, which leads to pimples, blackheads, and breakouts.

8. Forgetting to remove makeup
Greasy, oil-based makeup can cause pimples. Avoid applying heavy makeup and try to use water-based cosmetics. Always stick to natural products since chemicals can cause acne breakout as well. Most importantly, never forget to properly wash off makeup before going to bed.

9. Travel
When you travel far, the change in the environment, like the weather, temperature, humidity, water, etc., can trigger the formation of pimples.

10.Dirty Skin
When dirt and sweat accumulates on your skin, they block the pores and this can lead to pimples.

Who can get Pimples?
People of all races and Ages get pimples. Pimple is most common amongst teenagers and young adults, with about 80% of people affected between the ages of 11 and 30. It also affects a few people in their forties and fifties as well.

Types of Pimples
Whiteheads (Closed Comedomes): These types are small and remains under the skin and never breaks through.
Blackheads (Open Comedomes): These types are are black and clearly visible, as they appear on the surface of the skin. They are actually black not because of dirt, but air reacting to the inside of the pimple.
Papules: These form when an infected skin pore or follicle is near the skin surface. Papules can be sensitive to the touch.
Pustules: Clearly visible on the surface of the skin. They are red at their base and have pus at the top.
Nodules: Visible on the skin. They are a type of hard pimple that can be large, solid and painful. They form when an infected skin pore or follicle is located deep below the skin surface.
Cysts: These are found deep below the skin when a pus-filled membrane forms around the infection. They are likely to scar.

Prevention and Management Tips
Keep your skin clean.
Try to keep cool and dry in hot and humid climates, to prevent sweating.
Avoid anxiety and stress, as it can increase production of cortisol and adrenaline, which exacerbate acne.
Avoid excessive sun exposure, as it can cause the skin to produce more sebum.
Keep hair clean, as it collects sebum and skin residue. Avoid greasy hair products, such as those containing cocoa butter.
Use an electric shaver or sharp safety razors when shaving. Soften the skin and beard with warm soapy water before applying shaving cream.
Choose makeup for sensitive skin and avoid oil-based products. Remove makeup before sleeping.
Clean spectacles regularly as they collect sebum and skin residue.
Wash hands frequently, especially before applying lotions, creams, or makeup.
Hold the phone away from the skin when talking, as it is likely to collect sebum and skin residue.
Refrain from touching the face regularly to prevent spreading dirt and oil.
If pimple is on the back, shoulders, or chest, try wearing loose clothing to let the skin breathe. Avoid tight garments, such as headbands, caps, and scarves, or wash them regularly if used.
Avoid popping pimples, as this makes scarring more likely to occur.
Do not scrub the skin or burst the pimples, as this may push the infection further down, causing more blocking, swelling, and redness.

Treatment of Pimples
I will place treatment types under three groups.

Topical Treatment: These are treatment that need to be applied directly to the skin. There are a variety of topical treatments for pimples. Many are available over the counter. You might need a prescription to get others. Topical treatments can kill bacteria or target other symptoms, such as reducing the oil on your skin.
