The Edo State Police Command has returned to a building contractor, Emmanuel Alabede, the N100,000 bribe collected from him by some policemen attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the command.

It was gathered that the state Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo, invited Alabede for a discussion on the alleged bribe immediately after PUNCH Metro reported it on July 17, 2018.

The building contractor said he could not immediately see the CP as he was “busy with work.”

He added that when he eventually visited the command on Thursday, August 9, the money was refunded to him.

PUNCH Metro had reported that Alabede was travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to Abuja when the commercial car he was travelling in was stopped by the cops along the Ibilo-Okene Expressway and the bags of the occupants of the car searched.

The operatives were reportedly searching Alabede’s mobile phone when a bank alert of N200,000 popped up on the phone.

It was reported that the cops allegedly threatened to kill him if he failed to give them part of the N200,000.

The contractor said since he was afraid for his life, he reluctantly followed them to a Point of Sale (POS) operator nearby and he made a withdrawal of N100,000 through the POS machine, which the policemen took from him.

Alabede said after his story was published by The PUNCH, he got a call from the state Commissioner of Police, who noted that his attention was drawn to the story.

He said, “I went to the command with my lawyer on Thursday and I narrated what happened to the CP. The man was angry at the cops.

“I later wrote a withdrawal letter of the case and my money was refunded to me.

“I withdrew the case for the sake of humanity and my own safety because if they should dismiss the policemen, I don’t know what will become of them.

“They had job when they perpetrated the act; imagine what they will do when they don’t have job again.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank PUNCH newspapers for publishing my ordeal; the CP and the DCP for acting promptly.”

Alabede, who said the bribe-seeking policemen had been arrested and were being detained, added that the CP promised that the cops would be tried.

“But the best thing is for the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to reform the force,” he said.

The police spokesperson, Chidi Nwabuzor, declined comment.

I am a student of UNN. I am afraid of giving more details of myself. On the 25 of June, 2018 Police Officers from SARS Area Command Nsukka, Enugu State invaded our lodge on a Monday morning, while we were still asleep, they came to our off campus lodge in search of two guys that lives in the same hostel with us, so when they came, they were up to 5 to 6 in number, with their guns they broke my door, and ordered my room mate and I to go outside we initially thought they were armed robbers because they weren't on uniform. They also invaded the room next to mine, the occupants there are also two, they told them to go outside, after which their superior asked us a question, saying
"who amongst you guys goes by the name Charles and Andre, the two guys bearing the name identified themselves, they tied them and took their properties,so their superior the one by name SUNDAY DUMBIRI now told us that we should come to their station the next day being Tuesday,we were four in number,my roommate and I and also my next door neighbor we are also my departmental guys they are two in number aside from my roommate and I.Then on Tuesday afternoon we all went to their station,it was around after three in the afternoon,on getting there we met one of them popularly known as BABYLON the second in command to DUMBIRI (08060705373) he said that we should write a statement, and after the statement he told us to call somebody that will come and bail us with 20,000 each ,when we questioned him with regards to why he said we should call someday to bail us,he ordered one of his boys to put us in a police cell and that was how we spent 2 days in Police Cell. It was a horrible experience especially when you know that you are very innocent. Pls share this until it gets to the appropriate quarters. The authorities need to do something about this wicked, malicious intimidation and extortion from the police. It was difficult for my parents to raise the money to bail me. My mother and sisters cried all through. They do this in connivance with a lawyer in the Area.
Many have expend similar ordeal but too afraid or ignorant to voice it out. Share until it gets to the authorities. You or your relative may be a victim tomorrow. These criminals must be stopped. It's already out of hand
