A delegation made up of officials of the Ogun government and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Tuesday visited the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) in Sagamu to assess the condition of the corps members involved in an auto- crash on Monday.

It would be recalled that the affected corps members were involved in the accident shortly after leaving the orientation camp in Sagamu while travelling to Sango-Ota.

The Ogun NYSC coordinator, Mrs Josephine Bakare, led the scheme’s team while the state government was represented by Mr Joseph Fabi, the Permanent Secretary in the Ogun Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Mrs Florence Takon, the NYSC Assistant Director of Press and Public Relations, said on the sidelines of the visit that the NYSC was happy the corps members were responding to treatment.

“Six of the injured corps members with serious injuries are recuperating well, while four of them had been discharged, with another two still under observation by the doctors.

“We want to express our appreciation to men and officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission for coming quickly to the victims’ rescue. “We are happy that just over a week from the Taraba River incidence, we are not mourning the loss of another set of our children.

“The report we have from the hospital here is that the doctors just need more time to observe those being treated before discharging them.

“As I speak, the remaining 31 corps members, who were involved, are being taken care of at the camp as they prepare to be conveyed to their destinations.

“The accident is unfortunate, but we shall continue to sensitise our drivers on the dangers of over speeding and educate them on the need to maintain daily and proper checks on their vehicles,” she said.

One of the victims, Mr Isaac Ukaegbu, 24, an Insurance Science graduate from the Imo State University, said that the crash was caused by brake failure. “From what I recall, the driver suddenly raised an alarm that the brake had failed and in the process of controlling the bus, he swerved off the road to avoid hitting other vehicles.

“ He lost control of the vehicle and it crashed and immediately caught fire. “Thankfully, we all managed to escape, but with varying degrees of injuries, “he said.

A total of 2,411 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 corps members completed their orientation course which began on July 24 at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Sagamu.

They had all received their postings to their places of primary assignments.
